Gas to LP Conversion
With the rising fuel costs, as well as our vintage vehicles emitting 40x more pollutants than modern vehicles....I have decided to investigate converting my 1976 450 sl (107) over to LP gas. Has anyone had success or failure in doing this type of conversion?

There have been a couple of threads on the board regarding the conversion. Do a search.
My advice is to not do it. You're looking at $600+, loss of a trunk (for the tank), lower power and the biggest pain is finding a reliable refill station. |

Common conversion on cars in the UK, but LPG is 1/2 the cost of regular fuel and many gas stations sell it. You can buy tanks that fit where the spare wheel would sit. The engines can be set up to run on LPG or regular gas at a flip of a switch.
How much is LPG these days?

Right now there are several LP fill stations around Birmingham, one is about 10 min from my house. LP is currently half of the price of 87 octane....considering that i get 9mpg using the 93 octane, there are several fill stations in my area...and I would be getting a dual system anyway... this really is appealing. Plus, according to the local gas company I can refill using a home storage tank. I contacted a local conversion company that is looking up all the info on my car and supposed to get me an estimate here soon. I had figured that if it was under $800 I would go ahead and do it.

You have to decide if you want a dual-fuel or 100% LP gas conversion. Running out of LP gas is a lot more painful than running out of petrol!!! I dont know anyone who admits to having a home storage tank where I live - that tank & the car tank would have to be regularly pressure tested in Australia. But the biggest issue in Australia is that, now that lots of people have converted, the mongrels have rapidly increased the price of LP gas so its no longer such cheap motoring. Everyone had assumed that the LP price would stay relatively low cost as its not imported. Peter (Melbourne Aus.) |
