130 Engine Head Swap

Can the head from a carberated engine be put onto a injected engine. The model year is the same. Is the only modification needed is to bore and thread the injection holes.

Just curious, why wouldja ever want to go from injection to carbs? Are you putting it into a carb'ed car or something? Wish I could help ya with the answer, I'm green when it comes to MFI.

Just so that everyone understands. My injection head is damaged and I have a non-injection head. Can I use the non-injection head on my current engine?

Hello,

The heads from the carbureted engine and the heads from fuel injected engines are not inter-changable. They are close but the chain gallery on the fuel injected engine is wider. The two engine blocks are different also. Be careful, there are two types of M130 injected heads for these cars which are not inter-chagable also. Take a look at this chart. Your head casting number is cast right onto the cylinder head by the spark plugs.

The 280SL engines are basically the same as the 280SE, SEL engines.

ja17 is correct

Besides, the exhaust manifold and header pipes are different, too.

Yeah but given that manifolds aint identical how much different are the ports and dowels? Comparing manifold gaskets will tell ye that. And widening of chain gallery oughta be no prob for any machinist since alloy heads are soft as butter. Heck, ye could probly rasp and file it yerself by hand using no power tools. Meanwhile if ye want the scoop on oil and coolant galleries bein exact just compare head gaskets for each to see if they dont match. Yep, comparing the gasket kit parts## oughta tell ye pretty much all ye need to know.

(edit:=

Though ye can widen the chain gallery, there's question of chain guides involved Fer sure with different locations for their holding pins. And specs for those pins better be exact size opening and location.

Strikes me the whole ball of wax revolves around yer machinists' skills.

Having known JA17 for for more than 3 decades....

...my money is on his opinion.... If Joe says they are not interchangable, that's good enough for me.

Joe has worked on more M130 engines than most of us have even seen in our lifetime....
