'65 220 sb bad engine

I have a '65 220sb automatic with a bad engine and am looking for advise on what to put in there. Since the car will naver have a significant historical value I am open to all possibilities that can get me running for minimal amount of money.

Very much appreciated

Hello,

Are you looking for something different or do you want a good deal on an original in good running condition?

thanks

Thanks Joe,

I would like to consider an original engine. I thought I would drop a bigger engine in there but my cheapest option is probably to put an original in good condition that I can find reasonably priced.

There was one up on ebay from a '64 not long ago in CA:

I've been in touch with the seller for some trim and a/c pieces but I cannot report yet on their honesty. Let the buyer beware! $500 seems like alot to me for an untested used engine.

replacement options

What is the budget and how good is the basic car?
How about ALL the auxiliary items, alt, dist. power steering pump, a/C ?
Do these need attention,?
Sometimes all the accessories have aged and need resealing, rebuilding too.
I've done these jobs complete, and there are surprises everywhere.
Do you do the work yourself?
figure 50-150 hours to do it correctly, completely.
These (all) motors are getting expensive.

The car is good

The car is basically very good, pristine interior and all original parts are there except the engine, badly damaged block.

I don't really know how how good the other mechanics are since I have got the car in current conditions 6 years ago. The car was driven until the engine blew some 10 years ago and it has been stored inside since. There are 82K original miles. I will not be doing the work myself. I was hopeing to find and engine for $500 - 1000 depending on the warranty of it working.

Thanks

Somebody around here mentioned having one in decent running condition and just pulled outa 114 coupe. Yep, i think it was an m180 engine - check back 1 or 2 pages for thread titled "they said it couldnt be done."

bad engine in W111

Very much appreciated[/quote]

Rebuilding a heckflosse 6 cyl is not that hard. I have done maybe 12 in the last 20 years. 220Sb and 230S that were badly treated. If you have all the parts it might be less aggravation to just rebuild.

I have a couple of g00d 220S engines, one will probably go into a shell I bought but I could sell you the nother. I still think home rebuild would be cheaper and you'd learn a lot, but hey, your choice.

Condition of Engine

I have had a couple of "experts" (mechanics) look at the engine and the Block is too badly damaged (scratched) to be fixed. I guess if I found a block to work with It might be better. How much for the engine you have?

Scratches in the bores?

I would think you could sleeve it. Its not too expensive and since it usually allows reuse of the pistons it is cheaper than boring and buying big pistons.
