A/C Dryer

Which A/C dryer manufacturers have a comparable dryer for my 71 280 sel? The original is no longer available from Mercedes.

Most of them have a long skinny version, but the modern ones have a pressure switch built into them and nearly all are only for R134a which is noxious and will be banned shortly and then you will need to source something else....

I've been looking closely at the aircon compressor and condensor in my 2000 model diesel Van which is beautifully designed and made (unlike the rest of the vehicle) and would fit into a W108 or 109 if it weren't for the Poly belt drive.

Looking down the road post heater core/blower repair...is there a product called 'Freeze 12' which is OK to use with the AC system? I saw a pop up add for this product in a recent search and was curious as to it's effectiveness. Is R-12 still available for use in our older MB's?

R12...haven't you heard of Al Gore? . While the rest of the world banned the stuff the USA still has vast stocks of it and China still makes it. It's the best fridge gas ( apart from propane) ever devised .I wish Ali were down here and I could buy his gas from him!.

I was told that although we pions aren't allowed to use R12 anymore, the US Navy has recently awarded a contract to Dupont to supply the entire fleet of battleships w/R12.

I have done quite a bit of reading on Freeze 12, and it appears that it is compatible (no changing of seals necssary) w/an R12 system and absolutely harmless to the enviroment.

I realize the US doesn't have a scheme in place yet to allow carbon credit trading ( read S-C-A-M) but in India they have a system in place which allows you to get money for carbon credits. I heard of a guy last month who buys R12 and burns it ,along with other refrigerant gas by products. For every kilo of gas burnt he gets one credit, each credit is worth $15 US. Last year he collected $50,000,000.. .But if you know anything about r12 ,burnt r12 is phosgene gas ! ?
It burns bright green and with absolute knowledge of this,it will kill you instantly!
So ther clowns who are advocating this carbon credit thing need to be exposed before we gat yet another tax to bash us into submission....Now BTT

I've been using Freeze-12 in my '72 280 SE 4.5 with great success. When I disassembled the dash to replace the heater blower motor, I removed the evaporator and had it tested, relpaced the condenser, dryer, and expansion valve (with OEM parts), and had a local shop make new A/C hoses to match the old ones. The existing Frigidaire compressor & clutch checked out fine.

Charged the system with Freeze-12 and it has worked out great. I understand that due to way some manufacturer's systems are designed, Freeze-12 may not cool quite as well as R-12, but the shop that charged mine feels that the 60's & 70's era MB's (with stock components) work very well, and that has been my experience as well.

Freeze 12 is fine but most shops will not allow it to enter their recovery tanks. Because of its chemical composition, it will contaminate existing r12 in the tank. So, you can add it in your driveway, but you most likely will not be able to have a shop evacuate and recharge your car. R12 is very available on EBAY. A 12 oz. can is around 15 to 18 dollars.

Someone at Classic Mercedes told me that they heard that you could put the dryer in the oven to renew it. Is this possible and if yes what is the correct procedure?
What is the material inside of the dryer?

Freeze 12 is 80 percent R134 hence I would not call it an R12 alternative. It may be a good gas but I don't see any reason why anyone would choose it over R134.

Furthermore, I just bought a new condenser for my 6.9. The box clearly said that the warranty would be voided if anything other then R12 or R134 is used.

I have used R406a in the past and it turned my fingers blue it was so cold. But I think that with a bigger condenser and new hoses, R134 would be the better choice over any non standard gas.

One of my 6.9's uses R134 and it cools just fine.

I have heard of the dryer trick, but what's wrong with buying a new one when i sent a link for one that is selling for around $150?

I've done it when working on a concours entrant. As Al asks" why not buy a new one?" .
The stuff inside is just a desicant,so when you cook it,it dries out the water . pretty simple, but remember ,it also contains OIL! .
To rid a aircon of water it's simply a matter of running a big vacuum then flushing with nitrogen ( check for leaks at the same time) then vacuuming again. Water boils in the presence of a vacuum so it comes out easily.

Yes I want to put a new one one. The Hansa dryer from ******** is not the same as what I have but I have seen similar looking dyers from Atco. They have one that looks right which is made to go on a Jaguar. I will call them today and find out if it is compatible.

Are you looking for a Mercedes drier, or are you looking for one that will fit your car?

Problem here is that if it's not exactly the same as the old one, then lines may be too short or long and it may not mount correctly so I can see why Brit would want one that looks exactly the same.
