Not much by way of wrenching for me this week. I farmed a job out to a buddy for my 75 XJ12C which had no practically no brakes. He's fairly familiar with Jaguars as he owns an XKE, 3 XJS, an XJ6 and X-Type.

The main problem with these old Jaguars is the rear brakes. In order to replace the calipers, you really need to drop the rear sub frame completely.

We ended up replacing all the brake calipers, all brake hoses, master cylinder, rear rotors and all four trailing arm bushings in the rear.

While not mine, this is what a rear sub frame looks like out of the car.

You can see from the location of the calipers that there really is no easy way to get to them with it in place.
I spent yesterday helping him bleed the brakes and put the car back together.

The car now stops on a dime. But there is still lots and lots of work to do on it.

The rest of the weekend was great so I spent it driving the 500SL with the roof down.

I need to do something about the cars that I have and have pretty much decided to part out the silver 280CE. While most of the metal work is done, I'm not happy with it. I'll also dismantle the 78 XJ12l and the black/black 91 560SEL.

Here are some of the cars at the races, the old jags were old stagers that have raced since new. Especially the Mk1 which has been raced since 1958!! and is still raced at least 10 times a year.

My "Wrenching" this weekend was shoveling, hoeing, and raking out for the garden, then putting down weedblock. I got a few tomato & pepper plants in, but I have about 10 plants left that need to go in sometime tomorrow or Weds morning. Then it'll be back to wrenching.

The brand new hood cable I just put in my Jeep broke already. I'll exchange it & maybe just pick up an OEM one from the stealership or the junkyard. The original lasted 20 years, the replacement 2 weeks. And I lubed the whole hood latch system too, so it moved like butter!

Then the new exhaust has to go on. I paid $115, got a $75 MIR for a Dynomax. It's just aluminized steel so I cleaned it with brake cleaner, then soap & water, then put some VHT RustOleum silver grill paint on. I'm replacing a 4 y/o aluminized steel system that is completely rusted out with this, so I am hoping the paint treatment helps. Then the entire exhaust system on it, including the manifold and everything back, will be <2 years old!

Once that's done, replace the trans cooler lines, get some cheapo tires and get inspected. Finally, my laundry list for it is nearing the end! Maybe at some point in there I'll take the roof rack on & respray new clearcoat (from a rattle can) on the roof.

Got my exhaust on the Jeep this morning, though the pipe needs a little straightening.

I have the day off tomorrow and a long weekend coming. It started with me helping a friend out with bleeding the brakes on his V12 XJ-S Convertible. This is going to be a busy weekend. I plan on cutting up the 280SL shell and doing a belt service on my XJ12C and maybe dismantling my 280CE.

What are ya'll up to?

This weekend, I did...absolutely nothing work-related on the 108!

Picked up some rad flush and a new water pump for my Benz, but didn't get a round tuit, so it sits in the trunk.

Bled the brakes and set the timing on my 72 Fiat 500L and drove it down to the dealer. They want to display it in the showroom for a while, so why not.

It is *tiny* next to the new ones.

Yeah, it's kind of scary trying to imagine a car too rusty for Al to fix.

Light weekend for me. Changed out the tranny oil, pulled, cleaned, repaired and lubed the shifter assembly on the 250C. What a difference! Slides straight into gear and I can find reverse almost every time now! The car has always been a bear for me to drive. My wife is left handed (it`s HER toy) and the wear patterns on the shifter have been formed by her. Now that it is clean internally I can actually shift it. While I had the transmission fluid I went ahead and flushed the power steering.

Piddled about with the 250C's Megasquirt trying to fine tune it. I had updated the firmware to version 3.xxx and it just didn't run as well. Traced the problem to a faulty spark plug. *note to self, ALWAYS have a fresh, spare set of plugs on hand whenever the tuning bug gets into me*

Actually, there's not a spec of rust on this shell. It's all been sand blasted off. But i'm not finding any buyers for it complete and I need the space so the smart thing is to cut the car up and keep the parts that I think I may use or sell in the future.

The quarter panels are brand new on it so I'll plan on holding on to them, the soft top area (in case I decide to convert my california coupe to a convertible) and the firewall.

I would put it on ebay.de first. Germans would donate their left testicle to get an almost rust free body shell.
