In need of a M130 block

I had my engine block (plus an extra block) from my 70 SEL sent to the machine shop. Both have been deemed "Junk" and not usable.

Anybody have an extra GOOD block they want to part with? Or any ideas?

None listed right now on ebay or any local Craigslist.

Michael

I'd like to know too. The cyls can be bored but if there is a hole in the block, it is junk. These are stout engines made from high quality cast iron. Please ask the machine shop, these are not GM or FORD engines.

Nedd M130 Block

Block #1..... Rebuilt once (maybe twice before) already at .060 over and scored way too deep for my comfort level.

Block #2 looks like the previous owner timed it incorrectly. Tops of each cyl. wall melted (yes melted), cyl #3 now egg shaped, stress fracture along #5. (Junk)

I received a quote from Adsitco for a short block, not too bad of a price. (Anybody ever purchase an engine from them?) I just hate to go that route since I just had the crank reworked and have other parts waiting to go.

There's another thread here about that vendor. It's very worth the read.
Finding a dead car at a pick & pull would be your best bet. Used motors are plentiful.
If you must go rebuilt, start with Metric motors.

Hello,

There are early and late M130 engines. The blocks and cylinder heads are not interchangeable between the two. Even the head gaskets are different. the early version had a more square shaped combustion chamber. The later versions had a more oval shaped combustion chamber.

Make sure you get the right one if you are planning on using your original head.

One easy way to see which you have is to retrieve the cylinder head number off the side of the head and look it up on this chart.

Has anyone ever put a sleve into these blocks? 60 over seems way too much. I think 30 0r 40 over may be the max. That engine must have seen some miles to be 60 over.

Hello, Most Mercedes engines can be sleeved. However the M130 engine has very little material between cylinders, in addition a cooling slot is cut in the small amount of material that is left so I am sure it is quite a delicate procedure to sleeve one of these engines if possible at all. Three sizes of oversize pistons are available, .5mm, 1.0mm and 1.5mm. In many cases rebuilders have to go to the 1.0mm oversize on the first rebuild to remove all cylinder wear. There are enough retired sedan engines around that you should not have to resort to sleeving.

I have been rebuilding Mercedes engines for 27 years now in my shop in New Orleans. I just happen to have a left over 1970 280sl short block from 20 years back (same engine as 280se, 280sec which could be rebuilt by re-ringing and sleving. Contact me at wjaycox@cox.net if you are interested .
