Kangol Seat belt Questions W111 Coupe

Hello,

I have a 1961 W111 220 SEb coupe show car. This was a non-US car originally and did not have installed seat belts, although there are eye-rings behind the seats for (I assume) seat belt installation (see photo). I want to put Kangol lap belts in the car, but have a few questions about the hardware and installation. I would appreciate if an owner with Kangol lap belts would e-mail me/PM me.

Thanks,

Al Lydon

The coupe has selt installation points built in . Don't use lap belts, they won't be of any assistance in an emergency because the upper body will fly forwards .Mercedes always had lap and diagonals and this pic shows where the upper mount is located. The lower mount is in the inner rocker panel and the center mount is in the tunnel ( there are two threaded holes there.)

Glad you posted this and I hope more photos and info will come. I'd like to add belts to my Coupe also. I've got some MBZ inertia reel lap belts for the front. Can't remember what I got them out of, maybe a 114/115? But i want to go with 3 point in the front and I'd like to add ineria reels to the rear....out of a 114 maybe?

My W114 coupes had the rear reels bolted to the rear deck, right out in the open. They were on the outboard rather than inboard as show on the 280SE pics.

Thanks for the replies.

I understand the positive benefits of a 3 point belt system, but this is a show car and not a driver. My intent is to add some measure of safety that was optional for my car. I have tried to feel if there are "hidden" mounting holes in the upper left/right area next to the rear windows for mounting the shoulder point, but cannot feel any holes through the leather. Since my coupe is a 61 (first year of the W111), not sure if the shoulder point mounts exist. Note that the picture I posted, above, is the mounting eye behind the driver's seat on the side of the car (opposite the tunnel). This mounting eye is just under the front edge of the rear seat. The mounting eye next to the tunnel is right behind the right side seat rail. Thus, my car does not have pre-drilled holes in the side or tunnel as mentioned by Mercmad63.

Can someone tell me what the option code would be for seat belts for early W111 years? I know my car did not have the option (I have the Birth Certificate from MB).

I have bought off of Flea Bay very nice Kangol buckles with the original Star emblems and have recently won lap belts that will be sent off to Ssnake Oyl for re-webbing with my pristine buckles.

The main point of my post is to replicate OEM mounting hardware (bolts, spacers, washers, nuts) that attach the belts to the mounting eyes behind the seats (my picture). I also want to verify if the "Kangol buckle" belt is on the left or right side of the driver (as seated), and, obviously, the "latch" belt is on the other side of the driver.

I know some W113 SL's had Kangol belts installed, so W113 owners can chime in.

Pictures of original Kangol belts mounted to rear mount points would be ideal.

Thanks,

Al Lydon

The exposed reels on the rear deck is what I'm looking for. My car's got the threaded lugs there, so those would be ideal. Looks like up front I could go with exposed reels down on the floor, and hang the upper shoulder pivot point up on the "B" pillar where mine also has threaded lugs.

Todd,

Can you post a picture of the threaded lug holes where the shoulder pivot point would be mounted - or do you feel the holes through the leather cover?

Mercmad6.3, do your W111 coupes have mounting points like my picture or lug holes in the body work?

Thanks,

Al

Pop the top armrest trim piece/rail (the one next to the bottom of the window). This will tell you if you have the threaded insert to install the shoulder belt pivot. Not ALL coupe's were equipped with the shoulder belt but probably 95% have the insert beneath the smooth trim piece.

Here are the pictures of the front shoulder belt mounting point. As you may notice the piece unbolts from the car as a separate assembly so if you coupe does not have the holes you could get the parts from a coupe that does. This asumes all 111 coupes have the removable piece with the mounting hole.

Last night I tired again to find any mounting point for should belts. I did not remove any interior panels, but I did firmly feel the leather both on the top sill area (as pictured above) and also the interior pillar upright (door jam area). I was able to feel through the leather what may be mounting holes in this pillar area about 3" down from the top.

I won't be cutting any holes in the leather to make sure - first I would remove the pillar cover and see if that is a shoulder point mount.

The saga continues... BTW, attached is a pic of my 61 Coupe.

My '60 W111 Fintail came with no factory seatbelt anchors, but a friends '65 Fintail had not only seatbelt floor anchors, but factory anchors in the door-posts for shoulder belts. So sometime between '60 and '65, Mercedes added factory seatbelt anchors. It was a major project to fabricate and install door-post anchors for the front lap & shoulder belts I added to my '60 Fintail.

Your '61 coupe may not have any factory seatbelt anchors, but was probably fitted with lap-belts by the dealer or aftermarket. If you're re-webbing your lap-belts, make sure they're long enough to reach the belt anchors in your coupe. If those belts don't have the correct hardware to connect to the eye-bolts, I would get the correct hardware installed during the re-webbing, or replace the eye-bolts with whatever is compatible with the hardware that came with your lap-belts.

Happy Motoring, Mark
