Modifying old Electric Frame Lift.

I bought a 4 post frame lift that is designed to lift cars and trucks on the frame. As 'our' cars do not have frames, My thought would be to position lifting beams to the axle or the cross members.

This is a 4 post lift that has two rails that run across the length of the lift and two cross beams that can be slid up and down the rails so that you can position them on the frame or the axle.

I would like to know if it's feasible to extend those cross beams so that that I can lift the car on the jacking points and hence prevent any unnecessary damage to the exhaust system.

This is a basic diagram of the lift. Let me know your thoughts.

you can posiition the crossbar under the subframes in front and block it up with a four by four or similar.

the rear you can do the same but put the blocks under the three bolt bracket that holds the front of the subframe.

That's what I was thinking. Not as good as a 2 post lift but maybe better then a drive on lift.

Al, should be no problem to extend the cross beams depending on how you plan to attach the extensions to the crossbeams. If the current ones are hollow box beams, find a slightly larger or smaller version to slide over or inside the existing ones. Make sure they go far over or in and are pretty thick because you going to get a big moment working on them and you don't want to see them pop out or bend stuff. Check the thickness of the existing cross beams too. Get 4 lifting bowls from 4 old hydraulic jacks and screw those in the end of the sliding cross beams to get nice support points for under your car.

Instead of a straight extension you could add swing arms on each side of each crossbeam to give you lateral play too, but now you need some more engineering and you might as well get a new lift

Good luck,

Bert

Al,I treckon Drive on lifts are far superior for working with than the swing arm type .
With your lift, fit swing arms though and it's not too hard but locating a set of used swing arms which should be easy in the US.

The arms must be mounted close to each post and the pivots welded to the lift frame .that way you can access the car easily from all points ,rather than have peices of steel running under the car making it difficult to drop mufflers etc etc .

Shucks! Ain't nothing wrong with that picture. Just the "Arkansas way" to replace the exhaust! Stops all those sparks and metal particles from falling down your shirt collar.

Easy way to get all the pennies out from between the seats and those coins stuck in the seat slide rails.

Ron and all, I sold a transmission to a lady in Austin who was having her brother install it. I just got a picture from her of her brother doing the work.

He dog a hole deep enough for him to stand on and had the car up on ramps above him. Classic shade tree engineering at it's best.

I'm still having fun with my lift. I anchored it this weekend but now it seems like it may be out of alignment as the motor is binding again and not going up or down.

Disconnect the motor from the lift and try running it without a load to make sure the motor is OK .you can loosen each corner a touch and see if one or more posts is binding.
