New glass and seal from the dealer was about $600. I don't want to talk about the labor to install.

Thanks, I heard that coupes were harder to find glass for though, due to the different roof height. Are you talking about a 2-dr or 4-dr al?
Did you go to a chain glass installer or the dealer?

get on the highway and ride behind a dump truck and when a rock hits your window go over to the insurance company. Hahaha

Windshields and Euro Coupes
Haha, well this is on a potential car that I don't own! The windshield is cracked but the shop owner claims a new one for $222 plus a $100 gasket. Includes sun shade and tint. I'm seriously considering the car despite the rust and mileage mainly because it's an 85 Euro 280CE with really nice paint and interior including manual A/C. The other things it needs are tires and exhaust. This would be a winter driver/beater for me so the rust might be a "good" thing, if the car were TOO nice I wouldn't drive it! What kind of axle would this car have? I know the earlier US w123 280's had a 3.59, but what about a very late Euro? Is there a way to verify the year/etc from the VIN?
My biggest fear is the exhaust, it would probably be cheaper to have a local shop weld something up rather than trying to go original on it. The only thing really leaking is the back muffler, perhaps I might get away with just that at first if I went for it. Other competition includes a 280SE 4.5 and a w116 280S. CIS vs D-jet vs a serious Solex infection... Hmm.

Nothing wrong with getting a muffler shop to put one together for you for $100.

Go to safelite.com . They'll give you an "instant quote" according to your location.
I didn't find one for a '85 but I did find a quote for a '81 (should be the same) for $213.00 + tax, the labor was included. You have an option, either supply your own gasket (recommended) and if it leaks, it's your problem or have them use their gasket and THEY own the problem. I was very pleased with the last windshield they installed for my '73 280. They use Pilkington glass. Their gasket they installed split about a year later on the lower corner and they replaced it free of charge. Be aware! The sealing edges around the windshield moldings are prone to rust! If they'll agree to it, have them remove the windshield then YOU inspect and clean the area or you could remove the windshield yourself and prep the edges. It's your left shoe which will be wet not theirs. Last edited by Mike D; 10-24-2008 at 10:56 AM. |

Quote:
It be worth it for me to fully insure my car and get a new winshield. My winshield is delaminated a little at bottom. Not hard to find a gravel truck or an overpass in getto where they drop rocks on cars passing by. Only problem I see is at $300 they probably totaled my car out before they replace windshield. |

A new windshield for the 123 coupe will be expensive, they are different than the sedans and pretty low production. They may be hard to find from a generic glass company. Buying a used one might be a bit tough now too with the age of the cars.

$300 bucks installed. That's not overly expensive IMO.

I'm suggesting that that price is suspect to me. I would want to see the quote and even call the place to verify the cost before depending on it.

FL law dictates that a front windscreen is to be replaced if it is cracked or damaged by the insurance company.

I was told by several glass companies that the only way they could replace the rear window in my 1987 560 SEC was to order it from Mercedes. The part , not including the gasket was $1900.00. I just found someone who deals with Pilkington, so I'm hoping they will have an aftermarket window.
