Found a 77 450SEL 6.9

So if you found a 1977 450 SEL 6.9, that doesnt run, for $1200, would you consider buying it?

Here's the kicker, it appears to be a Euro car. Has the headlights, bumpers, and what appears to some sort of cloth interior.

Seller does not mention, and probably doesn't know why the car isnt running. I have yet to go look at the car, just found it for sale last night. What kind of model specific issues should I look for, and what are your thoughts on why it isn't running? My Benz experience is with diesels, so I'm a bit out of my element here.

Thanks,

The saying goes "there's nothing more costly than a cheap mercedes" should be "there's really nothing more costly than a cheap mercedes 6.9"

Seriously, if the body is solid you can always offer $500 for it and get that back from a junkyard in scrap but I would say if it doesn't run there's probably a very expensive reason for it.

Ditto on this advice, with the following:

The for scrap cars has tanked in the last few months, about 25-30% of what was being paid this summer.

The head gasket is gone on that one. It's been listed for months.

$400-$500 tops and as scrap ,it's worthless. Scrap for cars world wide has gone ,in two weeks, from $250 -300 to less than $20 and that folks IS world wide.

It's worth buying as a parts car especially the lower end with it's flat top pistons ( 9-1).A blown head gasket is a minor problem but requires a lot of heavy lifting.

The principal question in regards to a non-running 6.9 is - what are going to do with it? Obviously you're not going to fix it up and drive it around like a car. So you have to come up with an alternative use - e.g. storing things in the trunk and back seat, or shooting at it with an assault rifle.

Shooting an AR-15 won't make an M-100 run....or ANY car for that matter. Shooting $100 bills at it will however...

If you can pull it for parts, that trans if in good shape would be valuable as well as the LSD which would be good to use in another car.

Does it have 15" bundts? They're worth something.

head gaskets are easy, provided you know what you're doing and the chassis is without rust.
