108 Idler Arm Repair
Has anyone ever repaired the idler arm with the repair kit that's available? Interested in how difficult of a job it is. My car is a '72 280 SE 4.5 that has developed some slop in the steering. I've also heard that worn steering coupling bushings can cause this. Any thoughts or expert tips appreciated.
Tom

Pretty simple really. All the parts are replaceable and easily replaced. The only problem you might have is getting to it with the exhaust pipes that may be in the way.
You will have to inspect all the tie rod ends, including the drag link and shock/damper. It's a good bet they all need to be replaced. It's a good idea to spray all the rubber boots with silicone spray to keep the rubber soft. Check the steering gear for leaks as will. This link has instruction for overhauling a W126 steering gear, which is similar to yours. http://www.davidpetryk.net/Mercedes/Steering.htm
