Upgrading to vented disc brakes on 1963 220 SEB.

I have some front axle spindles from a later W108 model that has larger discs than my 220SEB. I like to upgrade the brakes and while I’m at it to change the larger disc to the vented version.

1. Are the spindles the same between a V8 and I6 on a W108 car
2. Would this spindle fit on my 1963 W111 200SEB
3. What calipers would fit for the vented discs (other later model Mercedes)

I think you can just use the calipers and vented rotors from the 108; the calipers have to be specifically for the vented rotors as they are wider to accomodate the thicker rotor... I am 80% certain the front spindles are the same between all 108, 109, 110, 111, 112 and possibly others of the same period...

Hello,

the vented rotors off the W108 4.5 sedans have the ventilated rotors. 280sd is correct, the calipers must be off the same version with the ventilated discs. They must be wider than your originals. Brake pad size is the same on vented and non vented versions of the W108 cars. Your spindles should work the backing plates may be different.

I am currently swithching out an entire front suspension from a 220SE sedan (rally car). I am replacing it with a ventilated disc brake suspension out of a W108 4.5. I believe it will bolt right up. A rear brake suspension will go in next. Also a bolt up item.

I am fairly certain they are interchangeable with W123/W126 calipers as well, the 2nd gen calipers/rotors are the biggest afaik. Certain 108's came in 4 pot calipers.

I think you should be ok

I've helped with the non vented to vented conversion on a friends 108 (280se 2.8), while doing so our research showed us that :-

1) Yes the spindles are identical on the sixes and V8s (above car proved it)
2) Having discussed it we are pretty sure it would, but the 63' spindles should also be the same taper ? (mercedes only redesign something if they have to).
3) The calipers are sized to the width of the discs as others have noted here, so if not buying re-cons (they're actually quite cheap) you want the calipers from a V8 car, whether that's a 107, 108, 109 or 112. We used 107 discs and calipers on a 108 with it's original spindles.

The only things that wouldn't fit were the backing plates, having said that we didn't need to get others we simply 'modified' them to give clearance using a couple of taps from a hammer.

I presume you're not doing the back but as far as we could tell the rear brakes are all pretty much identical in terms of calipers and solid discs with internal handbrake shoes.

Have fun

J
