New w114 owner!
Booooy is it good to be back in a Mercedes. I think it's been four years now, or more. This one is a 73 280 sedan.
So I spent the weekend evaluating and catching up on maintenance and have come up with a couple of questions for you fine and learned gentlemen. For starters, the darn thing's trunk lock decided to cease operation. I had it locked with the key, full clockwise position, I inserted key and turned aiming for full CCW to unlock it, and about 1/8 of a turn from full CCW it hits something hard and solid and will turn no more. And naturally will not open. The lock is lubed with graphite, I did them all, and had been working fine. The central locking is dead, I haven't got into the drivers door yet to check it. Two things come to mind, one is maybe fine the vacuum line to the trunk actuator and hope it will unlock it, or mangle the lock cylinder and replace it. Anyone have any further advice? I hate it when little silly stuff craps out like this. Next is the carb, surprise surprise. Believe it or not, after some external cleaning and lubing and checking of assorted vacuum lines, most of which I don't know what do yet, it actually starts and idles almost perfectly, cold or hot. BUT, it's trouble is at cruise speed, 55 or 60mph, light throttle, it seems to stumble slightly. It's hard to hear, but it's one of those things where as you can sometimes back off he throttle slightly and feel the car pick up speed. Other than that and a brief flat spot on sudden quick throttle openings, which is minor enough I'm not inclined to muck with it right this second, it's not bad. If anyone has any non-carb related things that might cause the light throttle cruise stumble I'd love to hear them. I haven't ordered a maintenance book yet, are there vacuum diagrams online somewhere or and good explanation of the assorted controls, namely those vacuum relays on the drivers inner fender? I'm dieing to know what all that stuff does, though I can make some educated guesses. Thanks for any information, it's good to be in a Merc again.

being a little more specific will help with answers Sounds like fuel delivery on the stumble, how are the fuel lines, filters, fuel pump. has the car been sitting?

The fuel delivery kind of makes sense, but you can give a bit more throttle when it's acting up and it clears up and accelerates well. I'd think if it was a pre-carb fuel problem it would continue to die out. I did order the carb kit today, and managed to talk my distributor down to $50 for it. I'm hoping the primary metering side is crudded up and there is trash in the float bowl. It has an aftermarket external filter just before the carb inlet, and what I assume is a pressure regulator of some sort, metal fitting that has a return line on it. I need to know off hand where I can access the vacuum line and attempt to operate the servo for the trunk lock, as I'm locked out of it. If I can't get in that way I'll have to butcher the lock cylinder and hope I can get in like that. Will PM you.
