Lightbulb Inside wood replacement

I would like to know if the inside wood panels in my 1973 280 can be replaced? If so does MD still make these pieces? Or were do I look?

For what its worth...there was a set that needed to be refinished being auctioned on ebay. I chatted with the guy, he was only looking for $249. I passed.

Try the salvage yards, or talk to your local school's woodwork faculty. They might be able to help you.

I remember my teacher-uncle in Amsterdam who did favours for parents of students in his spare time. He did woodwork and constructed a piece for a clock which was antique and whose part couldn't be found anywhere else.

I am a woodwooorker/carpenter. I have the same problem. I tried to veneer over the aluminum backpiece but found the compound curves to much of a stretch for the veneer and it cracked, even after steaming. My glovebox door looks great! I picked up a $15 package of Waterfall Bubinga at Paxton's. I am going to attemp a vacuum press next. I will let you guys know if I can perfect the process.

Thanks for the information. Let me know what happens. Do you know if MB sales the wood anymore?

Hi-

You might check these guys out and givethem a call:

http://www.rau-autowood.com/

I ran into an employee at W. I. Simonson MB in Santa Monica about 6 months ago. I saw their work, it looked really nice, just like the original finish.

The problem with buyung new is that the wood in the car has aged and the color won't match. They told me thay can match whatever color your wood has become.

I'm not sure of their prices. Hope this helps,

There are are a ton of places in Hemmings that do refinishing and charge various amounts depending on the quality desired. And CTH recommended someone a short while ago on this Forum. Try a search and see if you can find it.

Heritage Woodworks (828) 321-3523 fax: 1-888-255-3523 www.heritagewoodworks.com Ask for drew Tibcken. His work is highly recommended. I know he does Rolls Royce, Jaguar, M.B. and owns a couple or more 300 "fin" cars.

Thumbs down Wood is too gone...

The wood is too well shoot to try to restore the wood. I was looking to buy it new and put it on. I'm looking for the part numbers for the stuff. I see that there were two types of wood you could get for my car.

Smile wood dash

you want a wood dash go to a wood dash manufacturer. Classic Wood Designs in Ontario calif. 800-331-5192. he's been doing dash work for 20 years plus. he can repair your finish or make new stuff on your aluminum or on special thermal plastics that have no memory and will take a bend under heat. got burl wood problems he can even paint the bulls eye in to perfection. there isn't anything he can't do with wood dashes. besides he's my friend for over 20 years. ask for tim and tell him i sent you.

The wood for a 114/115 car is sealed under a polyurethan that is an absolute bear. It's much easier to replace it than refinish it.

Some of it is (was) still available from MB.

WOOD

what i've seen done when there's an imperfection in the poly finish is that it is heated with a heat gun literally scraped off with a sharp putty knife and then re-poured over. the action of the new poly fuses with the old and you can't tell the difference. but a pro needs to be the one to do it to get that perfect finish cause it needs dust free environment and a hot room to cure in. good luck!

inside wood replacement

hello vick

here is the man i spoke of: his name is Tim Moyer his company is classic wood design in Ontario, California. his phone number is 909-923-5222. give him a call tell him craig suggested you call. tell him what you need. i've seen him do burlwood where the veneer wasn't so good and he would paint the eyes in then coat it and you couldn't tell the difference. good luck and thanks much. craig
