Ponton Wheels

I have a 1955 180. It has 13" wheels, which came as stock on the car. I am not a fan of 13" wheels. Are there any 14 or 15 inch MB wheels that will fit this car? If so, which models would they come from? Preferably, these would be a steel wheel that I could use my hubcaps on.

Pontons have the same bolt pattern as a later MB.

The hubcaps require 3 spring loaded balls to attach the caps to the wheel.

The only cars that have this hubcap retention system on a 14" wheel are the 66-67 W108/W109/W111 sedans and the W113 SLs, from 63 to 67.

Later cars used a full wheels cover and attached at the rim.

14" pontons

Jake, you can use 14" Bundts; I have them on my 1960 180D and you can use steel wheels from the W123 series, which will also, I believe accommodate your hibcaps. If not they look identical.

I am looking for a 180 gas engine and a 180 gear box. The early engine, dead or alive, the W136. and the clutch and gearbox if you know where there are dead cars.

Thanks,
Darryl

Yes, you can use bundts, but the question was what wheels allow the original hubcaps to be reused.

W123 wheels require the 68 and later full wheelcover to be used.

The 67 and earlier cars used a two piece hubcap (when supplied).
The standard trim for a 13 inch wheel on sedans was a chrome plated steel trim ring with elongated holes in it that fit over the outside of the rim and was installed before the hubcap.

190SLs and later W113 SLs (up to 67), used a smooth trim ring that was independent from the small hubcap.

The 66-67 S class cars also used the SL trim ring on the 14 inch wheel.

Agreed, it's much easier to source the bundts or the 68 and later wheels, but they will not allow the small original hubcap to be mounted in stock form.

Another popular update is to use the aluminum (mit wheelcover) 14 inch wheels that came on the W108/W109 small V-8 models and late W123 240Ds and 300Ds.

All later wheels can have the 3 hubcap mounts installed, just depends how much effort you want to expend.

Jim
