See link: http://sfbay.craigslist.org/sby/cto/947864831.html It was posted yesterday in San Jose.

It's a lot of effort to sell a car for $2100 and it's not even close to being worth $21,000.

If there's a bluebook price anywhere for a car this old, it probably lists something close to $2100.

What's wrong with this for $2100.00 ? Not a bad price, and so it's not a diesel.

Looks fine and seems in good shape.
BTW...I think he has read 'How To Write Good Advertising '.
I remember reading about how you should always use cap's for each word.

Looks like a good buy

If it wasn't for the distance I would be there to check that one out and would probably buy it.

Yeah, pictures are sometimes deceiving though. I bought three vehicles off of ebay before. All three of which looked fantastic in the pictures. Uppon delivery, two of them (1982 280CE, Euro, and 1979 300CD, US) Turned out to be rusted, and rotted beyond even the few thousand I paid for them. In fact, together, the two might have been worth 500 bucks total. They both turned into parts cars for me. The third, a 560SEC, turned out to be nice, but nowhere near as nice as it was advertised, or I was told on the phone it was.

Long and short of it; This car could very possibly turn out to be nothing more than a parts car for someone. It could be rusted, or banged up beyond belief, with a whole bucket of bondo and a Maaco paint job on it.

Another serious consideration; The pictures could also possibly be ten/fifteen years old, from a time when the car might have looked better..I came to the resolve that that happened to be the case with the 560SEC, I picked up that time. Just my take on the situation....

I agree...
Anything that old and I want to touch it, smell it , drive it , and ask plenty of trick questions..
My theory on ones from ebay is if the car was really that creamo, what the hell would you have to ebay it for...you could park it on the side of the road with a For Sale sign in the window and if was even close to how it is described, it would be snapped up in heartbeat.

Ones like that that are true cream-puffs get more $$$$$$ than a couple grand. And they have documetation to go along with the ODO....
Very , Very few that vintage have not been rolled over at least once, and you can't tell b/c they don't register past 99K...............

It has to be seen, smelled and driven

But if I was anywhere near San Jose I would be all over that car. The description sounds so trite. Seems like the people who are selling it have very little interest in it and just want it gone. It would seem it they had any sense they would have put in a shot or two of the 280 FI engine. That alone in good low mileage condition is worth more then the $2100.00 asking price. But from where I am, I don't know if there is an engine in it. No pictures and he doesn't say so.

That looks like a great car. I would jump on that one. Of course, you will spend some money going through all the normal stuff that should be about to leak or break. When I was looking for my car, this ad would have made me fly from Houston to San Jose to buy it.

Then again... Some things that seem too good to be true to out to be a waste of time and money. This car is probably not worth $21,000, but if it is what the advertisement suggests, it might be worth $10k. I have seen them sell for that and slightly more on Ebay.

The pessimistic and suspicious side of me has some questions. The ad is written in "non-native English or English as a second language". How do they know it only has 58,xxx miles? How long has this person owned the car? If they bought the car recently, did they find out what a valve job or transmission rebuild costs and decide to get out before it becomes a $12,000 car?

How do you figure that??

The 4.5 are in more demand than that, and they are 4-5K.
$2,100 is the correct price .

I forgot...Cal Car...have to add the CAL CAR ego to the price...
Wait a min...I think that was Telly Savalas car , ..yeah, that would make it 21K....

...Had to be a Celeb car if it is from Cal...fer sure......

Actually, it is nothing more than a 6 cyl, 108 SE sedan, which there was nothing special about ... but it does look decent .

if you think that is a fair price for a low milage ( seller may full service history) I have a beautiful bridge in London you may be interested in.
Good W108 280's both 6's and 8's fetch five figures in Europe every day. If i were in the USA I would fly in and look it over, then buy it and ship it. It also has factory air which is quite rare outside the USA.
Don't believe me? Check these as a fair indication.

A W108 is a great classic car for those who may not be interested in crawling around under the car ,you can still get them serviced at better dealer ships, parts are not a problem, you have superior build quality and unlike a 300SEL they have generally been well maintained because of cheaper service costs and NO DEPRECIATION.

Why not contact the seller and find out about the price instead of speculating?

I personally smell a scam - setting is too nice, maybe hijacked pictures, odd grammar and capitalization. Don't send a money order to get the key!

But on the other hand there is a phone number.
