Do they us the same injection pump and accessories? What do I need to find to drop in a 240D engine? Anyone have one they want to sell? These projects do tend to grow, don't they.

The 220's and 240's are notorious for cracked heads from overheating. Yank the head and see what you got. The cracks are obvious but if the pistons and cylinder walls look good you can get away with just a used head. The bottom ends on the diesels are almost bullet-proof.

Where are you located? My indy has a '75 240D with some bad body rust but a decent engine (even has a manual tranny!). I'm in central PA. (its really supposed to be a backup in case anything happens to mine, but I don't have any means to swap engines at this point, so it may as well get used by someone before it sits too long).

I really like my w115. If you were to get it running, it would be a fun little car.

I'm in Austin, TX, so while that's an attractive idea, that's probably not too feasible. I'm thinking I'll pull the head - should be fairly easy right? I've put one back on a OM617.952 before, and this looks much simpler.

I agree, that's what I'm going to do. Anyone know where I can get the service manual?

It's basically a broken car that's worth close to nothing. If you screw it up majorly, you end up with.... a broken car that's worth close to nothing, so have at it! It's a perfect opportunity to learn without too much consequence. You have nothing to lose but time and money ;-)

Seriously though, if you get it running right I think it'd be a fun driver. Possibly working A/C!?! Hell that's worth it right there, and the 220D is a plenty good car. The 240D only made 5 more hp and weighed 200lbs more so I doubt the difference is that great. In a race between painfully slow and painfully slow: who cares. Maybe you could find a nice early Beetle or Renault Dauphine to race.

Nope, I wouldn't even try to quarter-mile a camel in a 300D, camels are fast!

Shall we just say, as slow as Christmas?

fun :)

I went over it in detail today - I'm really pretty pleased with it, even non-running. The rust in the trunk is confined to the area the rubber mat contacts, obviously it was getting wet. The spare tire well plug is missing, so no rust there. There's some rusted through places in the trunk, but since that looks like just a flat trunk floor, it doesn't look like it would be hard to repair. The other really rusty spot is where the seams come together for the front driver's floorboard/fender, just short of the jack point and there's a quarter-sized hole in the floorboard. The jack point is untouched though. There's some spots here and there but just bits and corners, nothing like my 280SE.

The air filter is missing, but the tub is full of oil. I think the glow plugs have been converted, I found a couple of loop plugs in the trunk. The salt shaker doesn't do anything when I pull the knob. I found another salt shaker cover, anodized black as opposed to the chrome one on the dash. What is in that thing anyway?

I found a 1/2" socket, a quarter, a diesel receipt from 9/08/08, and a large amplifier under the seat, bonus. I have no idea what it's supposed to be powering, there are just some old speakers and an old pullout Kenwood radio.

The electricals all seem to work except the radio - there is a knob on the console that I can't identify.

Everything under the hood looks great, except I noticed that the prefilter which was primed and ready a few days ago is now empty, so there must be a leak somewhere in the fuel line. It's a neat little engine, looks super easy to work on - a baby version of the OM617 with a tiny little injection pump. I sprayed some penetrating oil on the manifold studs and exhaust flange and will reapply for a few days until I get around to taking things apart.
