Capacitor on transitorized ignition

Hi I have a 1972 350 SL 4.5 with transitorized ignition.

Doing a tuneup today I replaced the capacitor inside the distributor with the new capacitance wire, which has two terminals at each end rather than the single capacitor and wire of yore.

I connected the green terminal end to the points, and connected the brown ground to the distributor housing where the capacitor had been grounded.

On the other end, I connected the green terminal to where the wire formerly went (terminal 7). But,.. where does the other terminal (brown) connect? I'm presuming to ground, but I left it unconnected in the meanwhile.

Thanks,

Paul

That's a fancy wire setup where the brown wire is a coaxial ground on the distributor lead. There should be a terminal block for the leads to hook up. The brown one will go to ground via the block. The green one goes to the transistor box. Later versions of the wire have it end with a coaxial shielded pin, like an oversized RCA stereo plug.

BTW, the case of the transistorized box must be well grounded or it fries. Make sure at least one of the screws that holds it to the body is providing a good ground (preferrably all of them).

BTW, that condensor is NOT providing any benefit to the ignition circuit. It's a noise suppressor for your radio.

I'll find a grounded terminal over near the coil and hook it up there. Sounds like there is no harm in leaving it open either. These old radios don't work like Ipods - there is never anything good on.

Thanks for the help!

The shield (ground) wire should be hooked up to keep the noise level on the signal line down. Don't leave it disconnected. -CTH
