72 280 4.5 coolant flush

I just had my radiator repaired and cleaned, put back in the car but now need to flush the system. The gentleman from the radiator shop said to pull the thermostat and run the hose through the motor until the water is clean, but I am not sure exactly where the thermostat is and which way the water flows. Does it flow counter clockwise from the top of the radiator to the bottom or counter clockwise and is there an easier way to flush the system. The motor hose connection that goes to the bottom of the radiator looks like it is probially where the thermostat is but seems tough to get to because of a third bolt in the back and the alternator being in the way. Am I way off?
