I think it's essentially the same 722.1xx box. The valve body will be different to match the diesel performance, but it should work OK.

Diesel is a 4 speed auto and the v8 transmission is a 3 speed. It may not hold up and it may not have the same bolt pattern. if it does work, then there will be a lot of people looking for 4 speeds for their 6.9's or 450SL's.

Ah yes, Al is correct. The 280SE is a 4-speed box, though. I may be wrong on this , but I think all the gearing is present even on the three-speeds. If you plug in the diesel brain you might get 4-speeds.

Brain? or do mean valve body? as far as I can remember, the only electronics involved with a 722 from and SE/SD is the kickdown and neutral safety, and the OLP system on the diesels. feel free to correct me. If there's some way of getting 4 speeds out of that transmission while keeping the range ratios, then I''m all over that!

Yeah, brain=valve body. You had best talk to someone who knows these transmissions better than I do. Maybe the guys at jie.com, fer instance.

I have had the 280SE gearbox apart (as well as the 300SD). I have to think they have all the same number of gears , including the v-8s (maybe the ratios are different), but the signals sent by the brain as to which hydraulic circuits to energize would be different.

a W116 280SE and a W116 300sd both have 4 speed automatics. The V8, W116's had 3 speeds.
