M110 Valve Adjust Curriosty

I'm wondering if anyone has ever done a valve adjustment on the M110 - as we must every 12500 mi - without renewing the valve-cover gasket and rubber seals, and without future oil leaks. I would guess that if the seals are still soft, they can be reused. What about the gasket? The last time I did my valves, the gasket & seals looked new, but I changed them as a matter of course. Is this throwing away money that I could otherwise give to my bank CEO, who needs it more than I?

I pull the VC off and didn't replace the seal cause it was less than a year old.

Yeah, I think the seals will last for quit a while. Did you replace the gasket?

Just today I changed the oil and had to reuse the filter-housing seal. The new one was a bit too big. No leaks.

no. What kind of oil did you use?

What I thought was a bad rear seal leak was actually just the plastic hose that goes from the head to the oil pan. Now the car doesn't mark its place every time I stop.

VW beetles need their valves adjusted every 6000 miles. I reused the valve cover gasket many times with no trouble.

I always wiped them clean, and if they showed the least bit of hardining or a crack I replaced them.

Thanks pooka. I think I've been throwing money away by replacing the gasket each valve adjustment. In these trying times, we must start thinking CHEAP.

Mercy, after 9 months of using Mobil 1 to clean out the oil passages, I switched back to Shell 10w40.

also . . .

Also . . . take a look at your oil filler cap- if the circular gasket under there is old and hard, oil will wick out of it and drain right down into the No 1 plug hole. Cheap part, too.
