Brake lines-71 280se
 

I am working on the brake system of my 71 280se. Is there a source out there which has OE lines to fit this car that anyone is familiar with?
I have made lines before but nothing beats a factory job especially the double flare on the ends..

I can see now what a bubble flair looks like now that I have concentrated on it.
I checked with NAPA today and I am going to try and match up some brake lines and fittings. Will there be a problem with pressure if the ID is not exact?

Bubble Flares are Euro spec and it has to be the correct size or the fitting will not fit. And the bubble will not be bigger than the fittings diameter or it will not go into the fittings hole. It is the fitting that puts the pressure on the bubble as the fittings threads screw in.. so you should have no trouble if you just use metric measurements and tell them Euro lines. There is nothing " OddBall" about these , they are just metric...
Even if you buy Factory ones , they come straight length and you still have to bend them to fit , so it is just as easy to measure the old ones and then get them by length already made up at a local Parts Store.
If unsure , take a line AND a fitting with you........

SLS has the OEM full sets, but I would not go thru that much trouble..[ but they are a good source for some other stuff..and a nice catalog for Vintage ]

On my 72 rebuild , I was able to use aftermarket - NAPA was able to help me out, they have a line of metric

I finished the brake system upgrade. Needed a reman brake master cylinder-leaking by. As far as the brake lines, I inspected them closely and other than some surface deposits the integrity of the lines did not warrant replacing. I really would prefer the services of a professional to replace brake lines with bubble flares. My experience is limited to making lines for an old Willys jeep which amounted to a somewhat aborted double flare which worked. All the rubber hoses were shot. One line had leaked completely through the fabric covering the inner tubing with the outer rubber holding the fluid in-amazing! The only other problems I had was the corrosion though limited at the connections. Using ample amounts of WD-40 each connection broke free with some careful finessing.

If you buy the lines as Roger suggested replacing the brake lines on a benz is the same as on a jeep. Nothing too complicated there.

If you have had trouble making flares before, the likely cause is a cheap flaring tool. All the problems I was having vanished after I got a good quality SK flaring tool. ($65.00)

I struggled with the double flare. I have never tried a bubble flare but I am going to attempt one when I receive my bubble flair tool. I really prefer to be self-sufficient-must be the prickly Scots-Irish heritage-will give it a try.
Hopefully, this is not a cheap tool although I must admit some of the better mechanical experiences I have had have been with the less costly variety because I wasn't intimidated to cut part of a handle or bend one to make things 'work'.;)
