71 280 SE 4.5 Question
I recently put type F transmission fluid in and now notice a very subtle, repetitive flair occuring in the transmission when driving between 70 and 75 mph. Is type F transmission fluid bad to use in the car? Note, I also have always had a flair from second to third.

I've always used dexron/mercon for these... there's a big difference between the major types in the big 3 (ATF +4, Dexron/Mercon, and Type F). Since I've never had an issue with dexron/mercon and my transmission leaks a fair amount (enough for me to safely say I am sure that's all that's in there) I would never use another type and suggest it.

I'm not certain about this, but I thought the MB transmissions of that vintage called for Type F. I'm also not certain, but I seem to recall that Type F will generally give firmer shifts than Dexron in any particular transmission. Sorry, I know this isn't really helpful.

73 euro 350sl runs on dexron 111, 74 US 450sl runs on dexron 111 no problems at all. generally most euro design cars from 70 up will run on dexron111 now. i only buy type F for my jags power steering
