Talking Photos of my 280

I finally had a camera and sunlight at the same time, figured I'd show it off a little. 1973, 119K or so.

This is actually the only non-surface rust on it, the usual spot.

That looks really good. Normally, brown is my least favorite color, but on a '70s car the brown has a good place.

Yeah, same here with the brown. It's very attractive on this old car however. Needs a serious detail job.

Looking good, wish mine had those bumpers.

Hint...if anyone has the older bumpers, like those, and wants to sell for a reasonable price....

Seems to be in good shape. I believe the color is referred to as "schitzen-poopen-braun"!

I'm amazed you still have a working transistor ignition box. They are usually the first items to go, along with the Solex carb.

Those old 280's are extremely durable. I use one as my daily driver and I mis-treat it horribly but it always performs.

The older bumpers won't fit on your '74. My project car is a '74 280C and I have some of the old style bumpers from a '72 and I WISH they would work. I could probably get the rear one to work but unfortunately we're stuck with the "park bench" front bumpers.

I feel so bad for the later cars with the huge bumpers, they are even worse than the w123 US bumpers. Should have been a crime to do that to these cars.

I was amazed at the ignition as well, works like a charm though, new points and it was pretty happy. The solex is the devil and I want it to suffer and die, but not untill I get aorund to putting something else on there. I do drive it just about daily, while gas is two bucks a gallon anyway. It's really in surprisingly good shape and mostly original. Shame about that crusty spot in the rear there, but it's very fixable, we patch together MUCH worse off Porsche junk regularly at work.
I'd really like to get into refurbing a few things, but practicality is forcing me to get another VW diesel running first. Maybe later this summer.

I figure with the pre '74 bumper brackets, some fabbing and welding they'd be able to be installed on a '74....

I may have what you're looking for. I have a 68 280S that I'm parting out (OK, just taking parts off for my own use). As I recall, the car is totally rust free, the chrome bumpers look good, and quite frankly, it ran just fine prior to me canibalizing the heads. Anyone who is interested in parts, I'll see if I can help you out. I'd hate to send it to the crusher, but I really won't have any use for it.

Just send me a PM.

that's a good proper looking 114. I drive a 115 300D every day, I'm sure your 280 is a little faster. They really are great cars, and too practical to let sit

All in all I wish it was a diesel, with a stick. Eventually the trans is going to die and I'm going to be real hard pressed into talking myself into the cost of a rebuilt unit from somebody that knows what they are doing. The engine is solid, uses no oil, even on synthetic, no smoke, nothing. The cam lobes are marked a little more than I like from lack of valve adjustment, but the mileage is relatively low so I don't think it terminally harmed anything. I think the Solex helped keep the mileage down over the years, it's been sold twice I know of because of it.

I have not yet ruled out the idea of an OM717 swap with a 4spd from a 240D and whatever rear diff I can find to get the highway rpm's where they need to be. My summer is pretty booked for now though. This car has the virtue of being able to sit in the parking lot wherever I am and make me *want* to do stuff for it though.

That's a nice looking car. There is a good looking 220d in the dallas cl for $3800. No space or cash prevents me from buying one.

All these cars and not one is a diesel. That's a shame.

Same problem, lots of cars and no diesels. I was a diesel guy for ages too.
I'm working on a VW diesel again though, I have a second generation Jetta Coupe I'm putting together, figured it'd be kinda different to have a 2dr.
I still have my old Pickup but it's resting for now.

Very nice shots. The Euro bumpers do look a lot better than the US bumpers that are on the cars just one year later.

VW Made a jetta coupe? Is it an 80's model?
