I was just about to call but I guess I'll shoot him a message instead. Thanks for the tip!

A word to the wise on these 3:27s..

These rears were used on the higher torque 4.5 engine and b/c of that torque, many resulted in a failure of the casting that the ring gear bolts to.
The pin that goes tru that casing that holds the spiders had a habit of wearing the pin mounting hole oblong in that case , resulting in excessive axle rotational slop. Make sure you check that on any used 3:27 b/c it was a common problem and not easily repaired.
If you can turn the left axle rotationally too much before the pinion yoke moves , that is an indication of that problem and you may want to tear it down a bit to check that castings hole beofre carting it home..........

Thanks for that tip Mike/Arthur, the wheels are in motion. My only concern now is dealing with the brakes, my 230s has alloy drums in the rear and this axle would have discs on it. I'm concerned first off about the piping/hoses hooking up and secondly about a proportioning valve, lastly I'm not sure about the e-brake setup. What should I do about these things?

How much is a reasonable price to pay for a good 4.5 rear axle? and for one with play in the left axle?

If I can hear a "clong" in the back when reversing swiftly, and anothe "clong" while shifting back int drive, is that an indicator of wearing as described above?

It's really hard to put a price on it. it just depends on where you get it and how long you wait for one to turn up. I see them on Ebay occasionally but the shipping would be around $150-thats how much the freight was to ship one that I sold to Wisconsin. I paid $350 for mine but it came with a warrenty and was in very good condition with a new compensator.
