what fluid and what capacity for my gearbox?

Hi all,

my car is equipped with the 3 speed auto trans, I guess similar to the ones fitted on the W108 4.5. Part number is:1092702101023864.

I have ordered a new filter and will change the fluid soon. What fluid should I fill it with? I was told Dextron, but when I went to Autozone I discovered there are several type of Dextron, up to VI. There is also ATF, and DexMerc, all in different ranges of prices. Which one should I pick up? In what quantity?

Thanks in advance

Gael

Are you completely out of fluid? Or does the car just show low when you check (Which is with the transmission and engine fully warm and running with the vehicle in park)?

I use dexron/mercon... picked up a gallon of it because I also used that in my PS reservoir for the longest time until I switched to modern steering fluid. I got the Quaker State stuff.

The level is fine so far. But the trans is noisy, and is related to rpms. I was told this can be due to a clogged filter resulting in the pump sucking air. The problem is worse when the weather is cold. I was not sure on what fluid I should use when I refill.
The W/shop manual I have covers the earlier type of trans, and capacities are more than a gallon. Do these later trans contain less fluid?

The original fluid requirement was for type "F" or Ford. Of course who knows what the original formulas have morphed into. I use Castrol type "F" when I can find it which is not always very easy.

If you are simply dropping the pan and changing the filter then 2 quarts are just about right. Draining the lines and torque converter? I believe it comes out to 5 1/2 quarts.

I usually go with the "power flush" available at most local shops and then change the filter myself. It costs between $40-$60 but it also gives me an idea of the transmission pump's status. They have a gauge which monitors the line pressure while the car is running.
