w123 door problem

Hi,

I have a 1979 w123, there is a noise in the drivers door and I found out the problem was the door check strap thingymajig, the thing that holds the door fully open so you have to push it a bit when you want to close it, it feels like it is loose at the door end like I can move it about an inch back and forth, like its not attached the way it should be, as in it's gone off its tracks

Big job?

No and the part is not too expensive. They fail from time to time.

All you need is a phillips screwdriver to remove the door panel.

Two screws at chrome cover at lock, two screws under the armrest, pop the black plastic insert behind the door handle, remove the one screw, and unscrew the door lock knob on top.

Gently pry out the pins along the sides and bottom of the door panel and lift the panel up.

The check strap is held in by 3 10mm screws, one above the strap, one below, and one on the inside door frame about 5 inches back from the front edge.

You will also need a needle nose pliers to pop the c clip off the retaining pin on the A pillar, and then a rubber mallet to persuade the pin out.

Installation, as they say, is the reverse.

Jim
