72 4.5 wont start

I have a 72 I purchased 7 months ago and overall it runs great. Tonight I put the car into park and turned the car off, it started to roll as if it was not in park so I pulled the e-brake. I then tried to re-start and the battery light comes on but nothing happens. The shifter feel very loose. It seems that it is stuck in drive so the car will not start. Any suggestions??

It does sound like you are not in park. I take it this is a (steering) column and not a console shift. Your linkage bushings are worn (or missing) and it's not going into park. If you feel daring you can bypass the neutral safety switch with a wire shorting pins (I dont know which ones off the top of my head and am not near a manual so hopefully someone can help on that end). Ensure that you have the brake FULLY APPLIED while cranking because it will start in gear but you can at least take it back home and then fix your bushings!

not uncommon to have nuetral safety switch go bad, they can be repaired and several links here to do so
Be careful starting in gear, as TOMGUY states she will roll off under power. Always amazed me MB's are so safety minded yet you can start in drive and be on your way- of course the new ones are better!

Thanks for the links. I had the car towed home the 1.3 miles and now I will take a look. Thanks for the help. Being new to working on cars this job seems a little scary but I will do my best. Thanks for the support.

Do you think I should search links on fixing the linkage bushings or the nuetral safety switch? The shifter which is on the steering column easly moves back and forth and does not do anything.

well I would start with the linkages, that may be your issue, then move on to the NSS. There are some tricks for the NSS and alignment is a key. Take one step at a time.
If your shifter lever is loose look first for the obvious, unconnected? worn bushings?
Good luck
