Which gear oil?
On my 71 280SEL I'm wanting to replenish the rear differential fluid. I just am not sure what is best to use. Any suggestions?

API GL-5, SAE 85w-90, or straight 90...LS diff oil of the same ratings if it`s self-locking...
A 000 989 28 03-MB diff oil of specification 235.0(open diffs) A 001 989 17 03 -specification 235.7 (open and LS diffs) Both $$ at the dealer. List of approved oils: http://bevo.daimler.com/bevolistenmain.php?navigation_path=bevolisten&blatt=235.0&content_action=show&PHPSESSID=dad75a876cede4223ce9b4513acea545 ...but I think if it`s GL-5 85w-90,90 it`ll be allright... |

GL-5(imperative!) having viscosity class SAE 85w-90 or 90.(both ratings must be present on the label).
I see some SAE 90-ies with API GL-4 ratings ,stay away from them...The additives in these oils are not suitable for hypoid gears ! Yep,I `m sure most GL-5 Xw-90 do the job. 90% of these oils sold in Europe would have the MB approvals 235.0,or 235.6... or MAN 342 and ZF TE-ML-05A/07A/12A/16C/17B ... used mainly in hypoid gear axles or non-syncroed man.transmission... Some folks use syn oils of 75w-90 visc.(GL-5),but I`d not put it in an axle with 40+ years old seals... |
