111, 108, 109 power steering gear overhaul
Where can I find the literature to properly dismantle, reseal and reassemble the power steering gear used on these models? MB shop manuals for Aug. 59 and later sedans and the 108,109,113 manuals do not include this info. please rewspond to jb@germanautospecialist.com.
Thanks for the help! |

Thanks jmela, Ican use this info for the 126 boxes I get in here, I still am interested in any other tech procedures for the 108,109,113 boxes which I think are a little different.
Thank you so much! John |

David Petryk reseal procedure
I need to make a decision whether to have my box resealed or do it my self. I would much rather do it my self but it I'm a little uncertain of the procedure. Has anyone done this on their 111 3.5 box? The David Petryk reseal procedure address a 126 box-I'm not sure how applicable this will be to my box.
Thanks, Tony

I had an ex Mercedes mechanic rebuild mine last year. He told me that the older steering boxes can be a problem to overhaul if you do not have the right tools and know how. Only the experienced mechanic should attempt it.
He did it for $200.

I went for it
After Tom Hanson told me there was no documentation on the 111 3.5 box I decided I was in the same boat as anyone else that would work on it and went for it. It actually came apart quite easily with no surprises like things shooting across the room and springs flying out(I still remember the first carburetor I took apart). I had it apart in a hour but there is still a lot of work to do replacing seals, etc. I figure a half day should do it.
The thing is so massively built I can't imagine it ever wearing out. When I reassemble it I will document it and post the pictures. It is quite a bit different that the box detailed in the David Petryk procedure but I used it as a general guideline.

Too bad you're so far away or I'd volunteer to help just to learn for myself. I need to hurry up and find myself a dream job in the Tahoe area!
I look forward to your photos and instructions. I'm sure mine is the same and I'd love to do it myself also. The epc website (http://epc.startekinfo.com/epc/home.jsp) makes it look intimidating in its exploded view.

It is much simpler than I anticipated. You can see it all in the pictures-there is not much to it. I put the steering shaft back in the empty case and put the cover on to see what the bearings felt like. It feels like a new unit. There is NO play whatsoever and the shaft actually had to be rotated into the bearings as it was put back into the case and the cover put on. Very smooth rotation with a tiny amount of resistance. Needle bearings throughout. I don't know how many miles my car has on it but I know it is a lot. I am totally amazed at how well built the box is.
I remember rebuilding the box on my 65 Mustang and it just had cheap sleeve bearings.

Mine has no play. I just want to reseal it. Should I take it completely apart like you did or can I save some steps by accessing the seals without taking everything apart?

It really needs to be removed from the car and dissasembled to do the job. I plan on completing it in the next couple weeks but I planned on having my car done 5 years ago so we will see how it goes.

OK, I took the W108 4.5 power steering box apart and started cleaning parts and replacing seals.
The repair kit I got seems to have more seals than I can identify on the box. I see there is a stop washer that goes on the rack gear assembly, assuming there are also seals to be replaced inside that unit? I was warned to leave that unit alone because if the balls come out of it I'm told it's a mess to put it back together. On the other hand I don't want to do all that work only to have a steering box that doesn't work properly because I didn't replace all the seals? Any help here on what to do would be very appreciated! Thanks in advance! |
