Graham: As the old boot ends that go over the plugs and the old distributor cap ends are both "Twist-On" and designed to be re-useable, most people just have proper diameter wire they cut to length and replace the original wire, leaving the old ends on. For example, FastLane sells just the end connectors for this purpose!

I redid my wires that were all cracked and re-used all my original spark plug boots. I did need to replace 2 distributor cap connectors due to some corrosion in the originals.

tomguy, are these plug boots and dist. end caps are non-resistor type? I don't see the resistance label in the plug boot.

I'm replacing the 6 big brass 5K ohms plug boots from my '78 280S with 6 Beru ceramic plug boots (from 220S fintail) both are screw types, I know they're short but I barely reached them with my long, slender fingers, I replaced the WR8DC platinum (I'll keep that b/c they're expensive) with NGK BP5ES plugs, after that the M110 starts right up and throttle response is improved even I didn't adjust the points.

Bosch blue coil, 4 Beru ceramic plug boots and NGK BP5ES works best in my M115-powered 1966 200.

Tomguy,

Regarding just replacing the wire. That does make sense if the end fittings are in good condition and you can get the proper wire connectors to match the OE plug wire boots.

Getting the proper copper cored wire is another problem. When I inquired, I was told I had to buy a full reel at great cost!

The problem we have, is the lack of information.

- are the aftermarket wire ends suitable for the OE end fittings or only for the mix of Bosch and Beru ends that Fastlane sells?
- Is the plug wire equivalent to the OE copper cored wire?

For those buying the end boots, the Fastlane site does not say if they are resistor ends or not. Even if they are, are they same resistance as OE?

Not saying that doing what you did is a bad idea. In fact it is a GOOD idea if you want to use non-resistor plugs like the NGKs most seem to like.

Having gone through this myself, I found I just could not put my hands on all the info that was needed to make a good decision. I finally went with a master mechanic's friend's recommendation to use Bosch resistor plugs with Bosch copper cored wires. A call to Bosch USA confirmed that this is what they would recommend, and it is an economical solution that works well, at least on my car.
