MB 280SE 4.5 engine numbers
Hi folks
I need to order a few parts for the ignition, so I need to know my engine number. I have looked all over but I can't find it.... My 280 is a 1972. First, can anyone tell me where to look? And, where there many different configurations for ignition parts like spark plugs (please recommend type) rotor and distributor lid? also need to change the spark-plug wires all around and "spark-gap". Sorry if I do not have the correct english term, but I think you know what I meen. The car was imported from US to Norway 4-5 years ago by me. Another thing, where can I get new buttons for the electrical windows? They are all worn out. Drivers window ia also giving me a lot of trouble, the mecanics have become "bent" so it won't operate properly. I have looked on Ebay for this but it seems difficult to find. Any good ideas? Thanks in advance ;-) Tom

Tom,
The number is stamped on a ledge at the back of the block. Armed with a flashlight, a rag and a can of some spray lubricant (even wd40 will do), look at the back of the left cylinder head (driver's side for your US car). Looking straight down, you'll see the block is about 3cm longer than the head. The number is stamped on that block. It usally gets covered with crud (that's a technical term) and a shot of the lubricant and the rag will clean it easily. As for spare parts, there are plenty of guys here with small parts piles. For plugs, the reference is the Bosch W87C or W7DC plug. That's an R0 (no resistance) copper plug. The wires carry an internal resistance, so the plug doesn't. Also, don't go for a platinum plug. Stick with the copper. Lastly, they've gotten hard to find here in the US, so an "equivalent" like Beru, Champion, etc is OK. -CTH |
