This looks like the standard unit for the 110 and 111. This would make sense because the 112 is pretty much the same in that area.

There is a special unit for the 600 that is unlike this one.

And for those looking to buy one of these.... I have found it is best to start with parts as finding a complete unit in excellent condition these days is not easy or cheap. But these are easy to rebuild and restore as there is not a lot to them.

These were made in Dallas by Frigaking which has long since dropped out of this market so there are no parts available from them. But the switches are a common part and easily available.

New motors are also out there for sale but they are not cheap. The size is unique to these units.

AND..... The design and features changed over the years so there is no 'official factory unit' as these were all dealer installed with the current model.

Have you priced a BEHR underdash unit for a 3.5 coupe lately?

BEHR came later and was only around for a few years before it was bought out by VW. They had a factory in Fort Worth, about 35 miles from the Frigiking plant in Dallas.

Then VW dropped them and they went back to being BEHR. VW marketed them under the COOL brand name.

The auto a/c was sort of invented in Fort Worth, or at least the guy who built the first one for Packard lived there. Almost all of the big names during the 50s and 60s were there. Clardy, ARA, Frigiking, BEHR, and some smaller companies were all there. A place called Acme Machine made mount kits for almost all of them. It was located in Arlington, TX.

These are getting more expensive in any form. That's why I like to look for parts and build one out of those. These are easy to build. Well, easy for anyone on this board, that is. And to find a nice unit is not only impossible but super expensive when you do.

I think the units with the small green 'power' light look cool, but they are tougher to get right when building one up.

The coupe BEHR units were made in Germany. They are sought after and difficult to find. Last one I saw was junk for $7500.

Several years ago there was a classic Mercedes dealer (I can’t remember their name) in the New England area, that was reproducing the knobs for the underdash Behr AC unit commonly used in w111 coupes.

I bought the knobs and Cresents from the late Drew Tibcken many years ago. The knobs are machined aluminum and look exactly like the originals.

Tony - you are correct. Drew made the knobs. Too bad about his early death. I spoke to his father and sister several times on the phone.
