1976 300D (w115, correct?) questions

Hi folks.

I'm not a usual poster over here, so please pardon me if I don't follow the Vintage protocol.

I went to look at 1976 300d (w115, correct?). The owner says it has transmission issues. Apparently he thought he had a neutral switch issue and was underneath the car prying on the exhaust trying to move it over. Well, apparently he was putting pressure against some part of the transmission that has a seal on it. The car spews all the transmission fluid out. Obviously, the car cannot be driven. And I don't know the condition of the transmission. The car does have a 5 cylinder engine in it.

So, here are the questions:
Would any w123 transmission work with the existing w115 engine?
Is the engine the same as a 617 engine?
Where are the places to look for rust in this body style?
How does the rear floor board on the driver's side get wet?
What are the things that normally go wrong with the AC?
Anything I need to know about these particular models?
How rare are parts?

Thanks.

yep its a 115. Parts are still easy to get. Thats car has a 617.910 engine, a early W123 tranny should fit.

The blower motors are a common issue with the W115's.

the rear floor could be a bad front windshield seal.

Rust:

Above headlites.
Behind front wheels - front of rocker, lower fenders, inner fender.
Rear quarter panel behind wheel and above wheel.
Upper front shock mount.

Wet floors means bad windshield seal
Wet trunk means bad rear window seal
