New vintage project purchase

So I ended up getting a wild bug and I bought another project. This car was purchased by the PO 10 years ago for his wife who drove it for a couple of years and lost interest so he parked it. Racoons got through the soft top and tore up the interior and all kinds of creepy crawlies live there.

Still it looks like a fun project. What do you think?

Looks like the body will clean up very well - that'll save you piles of money to be spent on an interior and aging mechanicals. Not bad at all for a project. Congrats.

Not too bad for a project car. The body (exterior/cosmetically) does not look too bad in the photos. I looks like there has been 4 or 5 inches of water in the foot wells though. How does it look underneath? Does it run?

I've not been underneath it because there are all kinds of creatures living in that car, i found a dead spider that was about the size of my fist hanging off the distributor, a hornets nest and i'm sure a mouse shot by the floor when I was putting the key in. I'm going to take to my shop fumigate it and hit it with a pressure washer before i get under it.

I did not try to start it, I wanted to drain the tank first of anything that may be in there before I do that.

Looks like a good project. About the only model of 107 worth fixing up if in that bad of condition. The euro model 500 is pretty hot.

It looks like you stirred up a real hornet's nest, Al! Good luck! I thought you said you had too many cars?

Ah, the joy of bringing back vintage MBs to such condition must be so de-stressful. I bet you'll live to be 150 (or you may not, if you're allergic to bee stings).

Wouldn't you rather BUY a New SL ?

It'd be MUCH cheaper in the long run.

I just got this car into my shop, back to barely being able to swing a cat. I gave it a good hosing down with a pressure washer and set of 6 foggers in the shop before i left. Hopefully that will take car of any pests in the ca

To the other questions, yes I am insane but so are you Britton and i'll trade you the 6.3 for the 280SL. Both are mammoth undertaking.

It's an 84 Euro 500SL and the only thing manual on it is the a/c controls which is nice because it's less problematic. There is no factory stick v8 after 79. POS has a stick shift 500SL but that's because it spent some time in the hands of AMG.

I paid what I thought was a good price, but in the long run and even though my labor will be free, this car will be far more expensive then buying a decent running 500SL or 560SL which can be had for +/- $6k.

But that's besides the point because this is how I like to spend my weekends.

I do have too many cars, I think one of my SLC's will go on the block. Probably the gold 450SLC 5.0 because the black one needs rocker panels which will need to be addressed before I even consider selling it. I don't like modern cars, they don't appeal to me much. The original plan was to sell the 6.9 and my E420 and buy a 560SEC or 500SEC. But in reality, that's not a good idea because the E420 is a great car, everything works, the GF loves riding in it and it's totally reliable. In Jan, I replaced the belts, fuel filter brake pads and rotors all around. I should hang on to it.

My wife also thinks I am insane but she has always been impressed with what I have done to the SEL. The SL project will be a huge job but fun. Like everyone else I love working on my baby (my wife calls it the shop car).
I don't really want the 6.3. I just like giving you a hard time.

I just bought a set of rear suspension buffers for the 6.3 so now I can move that thing around fairly easily. I will begin working on it.

Personally, it looks like a fun project. The exterior appears to be straight.

Are you going to post your progress to this thread? When can we expect a finished product? 3 years? It's an inside joke between my wife and Coda.

ROFL!!

I can just picture you cruising down the highway after this thing is restored... Top down, breeze through the hair.... Then 40 hornets fly out from behind the dash and a squirrel jumps out from beneath the seat cushion.

Just imagine what you'll find when you first kick on the AC and heater fans!
