Congratulations! Very nice car.

I didn't like my yellow hubcaps either. I paint-removed mine and then I polished.

I was able to find one myself that was closer (appears to be all original, no rust, just under 100K miles, sunroof) and took delivery a few weeks ago. Like you, I really like the car and I'm hooked.

Enjoy
I'm glad you didn't buy it, either.

All the car needed when I bought it was to get the radiator recored. It had a small pinhole leak at the top of the radiator.

I paid for the re-core, and Ryan volunteered to take it out and re-install it for free.

He is a great guy and I am grateful he did it for me.

With the radiator work done, it would have made it to MA. It is in fantastic mechanical shape. It literally needs nothing.

I love the color-keyed hubcaps. I have idea why anyone would want to remove the paint and leave it as polished aluminum.

Just filled up the tank and returned 13.6 mpg in mixed driving.

So far, the car has returned about 11 mpg in all city driving, and 15.5 mpg on all freeway driving.

Not too shabby.

Sooooo, based on the recommendation of Mercmad6.3 from Australia, I took the car in to get the rear axle seal fixed.

I wanted to take the car to an independent specialist who specializes in early Mercedes, and ended up settling on Marx Mercedes in Costa Mesa.

He is the guy that Road and Track magazine quotes in the article on 107 SL roadsters.

His claim to fame is that he is the guy who is well-known for working on and restoring 300SL and 190SL coupes and convertibles. His shop had nearly a dozen of them in different states of repair, and they were from all over the country.

He also had a pristine 280SL pagoda roadster in his shop, a '63 or '64 fintail sedan, and a W180 chassis sedan (don't know the badge).

Today he called me and told me that the seal had been bad for a long time, and that the right side axle was bad.

He found a used one for $300, and is putting that in.

He also told me that the rear brake lines were leaking, and his replacing those, as well.

I have a question for you guys: should I have him replace the e-brake shoes while he's back there, and do you need to replace both sides at the same time?

Were the shoes contaminated with leaking brake fluid or axle lube?

As a matter of fact, yes they were. With both brake fluid and gear oil.

They need to be replaced then. Otherwise, they'll fall apart in short order.

Picked up the car today. He showed me the old axle shaft, and it was indeed bad. The bearing was worn out and fell off - - it did not need to be pressed off. The backing plate was damaged. It was warped from previous damage.

He installed a used axle shaft and backing plate, replaced the bearing, inner and outer seals, and gasket to backing plate. He installed E-brake shoes and topped up the gear oil.

The job took 3 hours.

He installed the new rear brake hoses and bled the rear brakes. That job took 1 hour.

He installed new front shocks. Another hour in labor.

I've got 5 hours of labor and about $800 dollars in parts. It was more than I was expecting, but his work appears to be top notch, and I felt better about the car driving it home.

Yes, I did find a very nice car, that has been maintained to a very high standard by the previous three owners.

Steve Marx commented on what a nice example it was, and mentioned that he couldn't find anything else that needed attention.

He was working on a basket case 250SE that looked very neglected. He said I should just be glad that it wasn't my car. It needed everything.

I'm at Mr. MB Motors getting the auxilary electric fan diagnosed.

Ryan, the previous owner, had the fan wired to come on when the key was on.

I had it re-wired back to the factory setting, and then shortly after that, the fan stopped working altogether.

The car runs normally at what appears to be about 180 degrees. The closest mark is 175.

It can run all day long on the freeway with the temp gauge pegged at about 180.

But when you get off the freeway, and let the car idle, or if you are in stop and go traffic, the temp starts to rise and keep and rising until it gets close to the red mark.

Diagnosis is in:

Enrique at Mr. MB Motors applied power to the fan, and it's dead.

He called the dealer, and they don't have an auxilary fan in stock. They can have one sent from Germany in 10 days for $650.00.

He has a 450SEL parts car in the yard with a working fan. It is designed a little differently, but it bolts up just fine.

We'll see how it works.

He also thinks the clutch fan is a little week at idle, and is not pulling in enough air. I am going to replace the clutch.

Edit: he checked the thermo switch in the water neck, and a new one had already been installed that comes on at 190 instead of 200 degrees.

Replacing the clutch on the hydraulic fan made a big difference. I can now tell how little air the fan was pulling with the old clutch. The temp stays in a much tighter band now. After running the car on the freeway and even with all the heat soak, the hydraulic fan keeps the temp closer to 180 degrees, and prevented it from overheating like it used to at idle.

The auxiliary fan from the 450 SEL still wouldn't come on, although it would run when connected to a power source.

He checked the pressure switch on the a/c receiver dryer, and it was fine.

He checked the fuse and it was fine.

He checked the thermo temp switch on the water neck, and it was bad. Even though the switched looked new-ish, it was still bad. Go figure.

I could hear the fan running on the way home with the a/c on, and when I pulled in the garage when I got home, I let the car idle with the a/c off, and I confirmed that the temp switch is activating the fan.

All is good.
