I have 1978 280S too but it's a European version, according to my M110 service manual,it says M110 Euro is 9.0:1 rated at 160 HP, USA models had 8.0:1 rated at 120 HP b/c of emissions.

According to W116.org the CR wasn't lowered until Jan of 1976 and mine is a 1975 so I'm hoping that mine is 9.0:1

to confirm, rotate engine to TDC (0/0 mark),take out 1 spark plug at #1 cylinder then take a flash light and peek inside. Euro models have little lump (I don't know what's that for) on the piston top while the USA had flat piston top.
