Just an idea, but I would have the mechanic come to the ShopForum. He would have access to a wealth of specific info and the potential for fame (The Mechanic that Fixed Bachlauters Car).
It will all turn out to be a forgotten vacuum hose and he'll be hailed as a genius. |

hey Skalie..
Are you going to pull your engine, dash, etc??? Good idea Rackne! He actually owns an old Mercedes himself! A 280, I think....really nice.... ~Christy |

Christy,
Welcome back ! If he's been unable to get the carbs to behave, there are two possibilities. Ask him which he thinks is more likely... - The problem with cylinder #3 (The one that had the low compression) is keeping the carbs from working well. - There is some lingering Carb problem and perhaps a replacement set of carbs would be better to have ? What's wrong with the back shelf ? Visually, it looked fine. Not that I ever looked in the trunk or under the carpet there. At least that is easy to fix. I don't disagree with Paul about putting in a chevy drive train. but I don't agree either. It is an option. But not one that will make the car less costly to own or maintain. -CTH |

CTH!
That's exactly right...Paul thinks it'd be cheaper and easier to find parts if it had some Chevy drive train....I figured if I was going to go in that direction, I might as well add a set of those super bouncing rear shocks and paint some flames down the side! I called Jason (the guy with the car) and left him a message about jumping on the forum...don't know if he will.. but...also about dropping in a new engine (etc)...that might make it possible to drive the car.. (watch me do all that and find out the heater blower motor is shot too!) LOL!! ~Christy |

After consulting an e-article on the concepts of feng shui, I believe that the arrangement of the engine components in your car have disturbed the delicate balance of that which is Mercedes. The introduction of that which is Detroit may lead to a catastrophic introduction of the Yang to an engine bay already overflowing with Yin. To unleash the Chi, harmony of the earth, fire, and water must be attained. Perhaps this should have been done at the engineering phase....

too late on that. Damlier Benz already swallowed Chrysler and it's too late to spit it back out.
Paul is right, that the parts will be cheaper. The expense is in getting the chevy motor into the car and getting the benz motor out. Dropping another benz straight 6 into the car will take all of a day. As for the blower motor, if you're going to pull the dash apart to fix the firewall, then you're already there. -CTH PS. Hey, I just remembered something. I just acquired a 1973 model 200, which is a 4-cylinder car but much like yours otherwise. It too has a black dash with no wood. So, now I've seen two cars like that. Though this one is a parts car. It is totally rusty down under and the motor is seized solid. |

I got to see it last year while on a business trip. Christy, correct me where I'm wrong.
It's a dark green 1969 model 250/8. That looks quite lovely. Its interior is black vinyl and is in good shape. There is some rust perferation of the firewall, and the pennsylvania inspectors are very picky about that aparently. Compression is good on all cylinders except #3, which is down by 30%. The carbs were completely messed up, so Christy took them apart and with a little bit of moral support from this forum, cleaned them up and put them back together again. When I came through, I brought my carb sync tools and got the car running well enough for Christy to drive it out of the driveway. Where it would stall and eventually restart and make it back into the driveway. Most, if not all of that is available in the archives. -CTH |

CTH is right about the stats..
Dan....this is part of the problem....the car does look pretty nice, but isn't WORTH a *****....AND needs sooooooo much repair it's pathetic!! With this car, it's like trying to recessitate the DEAD!!! Maybe if I'm going to take on a project like this, maybe I should start with something that's not dead!! AND maybe has some slight monetary value...I mean MY car needs THOUSANDS of $$$$$$ and in perfect shape would probably sell for $1500...or so....I mean...it's a tough call... But part of me sees the car as this abused, neglected car that just needs ALOT of TLC...and maybe I should try to SAVE it...heck, I already OWN it, right?? But then again...the car has NO options....no A/C....no SUNROOF!! Those ARE options I want in a car!!! Oh...AND it's an automatic So....it's alot to think about... BTW....NICE PIC!!!!! SWEEEEET!!!!!!! ~Christy |

Spoken like a mom.
Really, there is no reason to chuck the thing. But you do have to get back into the mode of fixing it yourself. That personal hands-on work was how you got the most progress and satisfaction. -CTH |
