M110 into early W114, and lower grill questions
Hello All,
I’m going to look at a 1969 114 250 Coupe on Monday and I’ve a few questions which I can’t find the answers to despite a lot of searching around – though it is a bit early here, and I may have missed them, so apologies in advance if that is the case. I would be very grateful for any tips or hints. The car has had a 220d engine fitted – would that have been a straightforward swap? I’d like to put an M110 engine in there from a W116 SE, would that be easy? I know they went into post ’73 models, but was the pre ’73 the m130, or are all 114 engine bays the same? I’ve read that the front was lowered from 1973 onwards, can this be done to pre 73 models retrospectively, and if so, what does it entail – new bumper and grill??? I’ve owned a few 60/70’s models, but never contemplated a 114 until now. The look has grown on me, but I do wonder about the metal. Are these cars more of a problem, rust wise, than a 116?? Thanks in advance. Best wishes, Paul |

W114's can rust. Watch out for rust on the floor, a pillars, b-pillars, rocker panels, inner fenders , rear arches, trunk floor, rear valance. Seems that the sunroof leaks in these cars and allows water to sit on the floor pan causing havoc.
W116's can also rust so this is nothing that you're not used to. I would think that a 220CD would be quite a nice ride Depending on the part of the world that you live. 280CE's are readily available.

I remember being surprised at all the rust I found on my 250C. I knew the rockers were bad, but as I kept pulling stuff away there was more and more rust. On more than one occasion I thought I had made a mistake and considered scrapping it.

I'm about to embark on a restoration of a very rusty 73 280CE that has also lived in Chicago. Where did you get sheet metal for this car? Thanks

Al,
I would start with the dealer, as their prices really surprised me. I got the trunk floor from them. The front fender came from Adsitco. I know, I know, but I have a good relationship with my credit card company so I wasn't worried. Rockers and fender patches came from Sherman Associates. http://www.shermanparts.com/ Before and after pictures are here: http://www.pokrefke.net/250c/BeforeAfter.htm I am getting ready to a 280SE, but luckily this one came from California so I won't be hunting rust. |

THe 1973 and up W114 engine compartment doesn't have those two little bars that make the early engine compartment feel cramped.
Won't one of those bars be in the way of the M110 intake? Also, is the car a column shift? I was just reading another thread earlier in the week (or perhaps it was the side-bar conversations on a youtube video?) that mentioned interference between the M110 intake and the column shift linkage? If you could find that thread I was reading, you'd have a good answer. -CTH |
