Windshield is finally installed
It takes atleast 2 people to do this. I haven't tested for leaks yet but the seal fits tight so hopefully it doesn't leak.
Heres a couple of pictures

Looks fantastic man!! I'm still trying to fix a leak in the left bottom corner of mine. What kind of gasket adhesive did you use?

Are you sure its the windshield that is leaking? Are the little rubber boots that cover the wires going from the door to the body of the car good that will allow water to enter my your feet?
I used some Permatex windshield silicone sealant, its supposed to not cause rust like other silicones can.

Yeah, the little rubber boots and the door seal are good. There's a little section where some of the gasket on the outside near the bottom of the A-piller is lifting up. I tried some 3-M adhesive, but it only did about a 90% job (probably user error on my part.)

I am Planning to replace my Windshield seal too for a W116 and I got a few questions:
1. Do you install the chrome trim before or after putting the glass and seal in the car? 2. Glass being old, any steps I have to do to avoid damaging it? (aside from dropping it of course) 3. Special tools to remove and install the windshield? Thanks |

General procedure for installing the glass:
Fit new seal to windshield Install windshield trim pieces in seal Install assembly in car The trim has to be installed before the glass is put in the car. If the old seal still has some flexibility, you can roll out the seal lip from inside the car using a flat, blunt tool (plastic blade or butter knife) while carefully pushing the glass outward. Otherwise, it may be necessary to cut the old seal away from the outside, then pushing out the glass. To install, place a rope or wire in the seal lip (make sure it is lubricated with some type of rubber-safe substance) with the free ends at the bottom of the seal. Then place the assembly in the car, getting it aligned side-to-side as perfectly as you can. Roll over the seal lip by hand over the body seam where your ropes exit the seal , then continue by pulling out the ends of the rope, while making sure the seal and windshield stay as far down as possible. Continue until the entire lip has been rolled into place, then make sure the seal is in place both outside and inside. Then go ahead and test for leaks. It really isn't that hard once you get some practice. I would do it again myself if needed.

Well said, Loepke72.
For the W116, I would spring for a factory windshield seal. I tried both a Meyle and APA brand seals and both were too big ( the Meyle by about 4"). The APA is big too, but it works. I had good luck with a Meyle seal on the back glass, and never had a problem with them on W123s. Just take your time. Probably not worth risking breaking the glass to get it out- just cut the seal.
