Fuel Filter-71280se

The fuel filter system on my 71 280se is problematic or I am doing something wrong. The last two filters I have put on have leaked. Is there another solution for the filter itself and or any suggestions from the forum regarding tricks to accomplish this job w/o leaks.
Thanks,
Turner

On rear mounted Djet filters be careful of over tightening the fittings because the housing will tear.
On front mounted filters ,buy only filters which come with a new rubber O ring for the housing bowl.
The O ring fits in a groove in the upper part of the housing. Smear some dissolved handsoap around the top of the filter bowl .This will seal any fuel leak,.

Be sure to remove any and all old o-rings left in the top cover. I have found where someone left the old seal ring in place and put the new seal ring on top of the old. That will leak.

The proper o ring is square in shape, you need to stretch it a bit and apply a small dab 3 places of wheel bearing grease to hold it up and then set it in place. It needs to be completely set prior to putting the housing up. And as said remove the entire seal ring.

The offending gasket was cut in two when I pulled the housing down from the bolt holding it.
I will stretch the new gasket a bit as per your suggestion and try again.
Thanks everyone...

Good results today-filter housing not leaking fuel-stretched o-ring and used wheel bearing grease inside the groove for the o-ring then set the o-ring in the groove and let it stay there for several hours to 'cure'.
The installation of the filter housing was without incident although I did catch myself turning the housing. I stopped when I realised that the threads of the bolt had worked into the threads of the housing-it was then a matter of tightening the bolt to snug the housing face against the o-ring.
Funny how the simple tasks somehow become more complex than they should be
Thanks,
Turner
