Lightbulb I want to convert my Dual Carb 1969 230/S to Fuel Injection where to start?

To start off I have a 1969 230/S with 64,000 Miles the car is pretty much brand new looking inside and out. My mom bought it about 4 years ago it was drivable but it always stalled, backfired..bla...bla..bla. We have had a few people try to sync the carbs but it never works at this point im sure this 40 year old car could sure use a carb rebuild but thats gonna cost some serious cash not to mention I have not been able to find any information about the carbs it has they are Zenith but everything ive found in books and the net never matches up so i say screw it.

Where do I start with a retrofit Fuel Injection we have about a $800 budget and im doing all the work, I am also proficient in Micro controller programming I was thinking to get something in the line of a Mega squirt I want an EFI that I can plug my laptop into while we drive and tune it if possible or at least view what its doing. any good EFIs that anyone has had good success with? The easier to setup the better.

I know im going to need a crank position sensor and an Oxygen Sensor. What do i do about the split intake? can I just put 2 cold air intakes on them?

any ideas would be awesome! thanks guys couldn't do it without you

Not sure about the $800 budget. You could use the old carbs as throttle bodies by cleaning them out and welding Fuel injector bungs on them...and making an airbox for the split intake.

OR you could make your own plenam/airbox/fuel rails, something like this:
http://www.sdsefi.com/techinta.htm

Good luck and if you do go for it, post up pics.

Try to see if the intake manifolds of an injected M130 engine firs yours. I guess the holes for the manifolds are on the manifold, not the head.

If you were a machinist and could weld, something built from an FI manifold could be constructed.

If you want something factory/bolt on, find an M123 intake manifold (that's the 2.5l motor, not the W123 car). Same bolt pattern as the M180 in your car, except it holds a solex 4A1 carb (four-barrell rochester carb look-alike).

Onto this manifold, you can put an adapter plate and simple TBI setup and megasquirt your car.

The hard part is finding that manifold, as the M123 was never imported to the US. Reach out to the UK, German or Aussie guys here for one.

Your next best bet is the M180 unimog intake. Also a relatively rare part, but findable.

Lastly, you can use two trottle bodies on the original intake. Getting them to balance will be interesting though.

Have you considered using the simple and sane Weber carbs that you can get via Jam Engineering?

you could always gut the existing carbs and drop throttle body injectors into each one controlled by a megasquirt unit.

I copied these pictures years ago from a TR6 site so cannot credit them as i didnt copy that info. As I remember they gutted both zenith carbs, made an adaptor plate that went between the diapragm cover and the body and dropped in 2 GM TBI's. Once complete and wired they looked original (but 1/2 inch taller and 2 wires coming out of each) here are the pics I copied.

removed the cover, spring and piston

put on the adaptors

drop in the injectors

wire them up

and it all looks original but runs like a modern car

just some thoughts - good luck

Zenith carbs

I would suggest that the zeniths be rebuild .
i have these on my 230/110 , 220S.111, 280S /108. All are dependable and work perfectly if the fuel delivered is clean and setup correctly . Ages ago i got a German made carb synchronizer for the Zeniths JCwhitney still offer it,Excellent product.

The carb service section in the 108 Service manual carries a detail diagram for the fuel flow in the carb jets . With this understanding of the Zeniths you will not have any problem with them.
good luck

The TBI seems the best way on your budget, You may be able to use a factory ECM for a two barrel TBI system and just split the TBI injectors one in each carb.

Unhappy 4 years later...HELP! I can't watch this beautiful car just sitting around

After 4 years and 2 carb rebuilds the car hasn't gone further then the end of my street . I need to get the car running for my Mother, her 2000 GMC Safari has 200,000k on it now not to mention the 17- MPG. I was thinking of doing an engine swap from a recently crashed out 97 C220 4Cyl. The car runs great and is still drive able but the passenger side was hit right at the fender and the door seam i think the frame is bent but thats another huge issue.

Here's the deal I just don't know where to start and what direction to go in I have a flexible budget im expecting the cost to get it up and running will be over $1,500

I need to find what parts I need and where to order them .. I was considering buying a megasquirt II on ebay MegaSquirt II PCB v3 SMT Programmable EFI Engine Management System Kit Complete | eBay
but I still need to convert the 2 carbs into TBIs. Another idea would be to fabricate an adapter that would go in place of the 2 crabs to give 1 inlet I don't own an machine shop but have a welder... and my mom is a good welder, If anyone can make the parts let me know $$
any help would be greatly appreciated !

You need to start by looking at this:

http://www.peachparts.com/shopforum/vintage-mercedes/238292-m115-t-b-i-conversion.html

get some TBI's and have at it.
