Hmm , this is getting interesting, any history on this car, is it a euro version?

I haven't had a chance to run out there to take any more pix; trying to fit in boxing/sparring after work and a paramedic class from 6-10PM so I usually just drop dead when I get home.

I would hazard a guess and say that the previous owner replaced the rear struts with standard shocks as they look newer. But this could be a good reason why the rear end was dragging...

More later! How rare was this option?
WOW, lets see a picture of the trunk badge. I haven't ever seen SLS on a US spec W115.

Ok, I ran home and snapped a few cellphone pix after work. In addition to this odd valve, there is what looks like a vacuum accumulator or actuator on the passenger side, a little bit forward of the gas tank. I'll take pix of that and do some more investigating tomorrow when I can put it up on jackstands and have a proper look.

This is a view from directly under the valve, showing the actuating linkage going up and over the medial lip of the gas tank.

Edit: looking for other images of SLS valves/etc, I found the following:

This is remarkably close to what is on my car. Also, the accumulator (just aft of the differential) is the same. What the hell do I have?

There doesn't seem to be any other accessory pumps on the engine, although the crank pulley has three grooves and only one of them is being used. Not sure if that's normal.

Also I think there's something odd here - is that fuel filter setup off of a later model?

I bought it from a friend who has owned the car since 1986. I don't know about the previous owner, but I can ask (I'm storing my GTO in her barn next week).

Would the VIN be of any help here? It is: 1151101027184

Whatever it is, I love the little car. Aside from setting the valve clearances this weekend, I'm pulling the Becker Europa radio out to make an aux ipod jack.. How do you get the radio out?

Nah, what's cool is SCCA Solo II VWs!

I ran an '81 Wolfsburg GTI in '91 and '92, where it met its untimely demise at Sno*Drift here in Michigan; I wrapped it around a tree. Fortunately the rally was cancelled the following year and I didn't feel so bad not running. I miss that little car. I still have the Wolfsburg steering wheel.

'fraid not, sorry! I love the looks of the Europa. You should be able to find a good Europa II somewhere (not ebay $$$).

heres the SLS resivor on the passenger side of the engine compartment. Are there any lines attched to it?

Yes thats a later style fuel filter unit, people do that because those spin on filters can be found everywhere, but the old style are bit harder to find locally.

To remove the radio, pull both knobs off along with the bass knob, and then pull the face plate off, its held on by friction, and then you'll see little mounting clips that are held on by a screw.

Lets see a pic of the trunk badge.

You have one rare car on your hands, take care of her.

Errrm, the big round thing up by the firewall on the passenger side? I thought that was the oil filter?! Where's the &%*&F*ing oil filter?!

Snagged some more pix - definitely SLS now, but where did the pump go? I will ask the previous owner if there are any additional parts in the barn for it. She already dropped off the trunk triangle.

nice cracked CV boot HURRRR

YECCHH that's gonna take some scrubbing.

Oh yeah after reading another post in the diesel forum, I checked the hose going from the vacuum pump to the intake manifold and found quite a bit of oil. It explains why the power brakes weren't working and why it was occasionally smoking and running funny. Gotta order rebuild kit, too.
