Confused? 79 240D or 300D?
Hello all
I have a 79 what I thought was a 300d, but is titled a 240d with a 5cyl 300d engine and 4 spd transmission. I am on the lookout for a replacement transmission that will bolt up to the 300d engine? The only transmission I can find for this car is a 4spd (all manual buy the way) for a 240D my question is will the 240D Manual 4spd bolt up to the 300D engine for this car? Any thoughts or ideas are welcome??? |

Yes, the manual from the 240D will bolt up to the 617. This a somewhat popular swap (which I've been contemplating for some time). Is the transmission that's in it now auto or manual?
Edit: If you want to know what the car was originally, check your VIN. If it starts with 123123, then you have a 240D. If it starts with 123130, you have a 300D. If it starts with something else, let us know.

The WDB did not start until 1980.
Well, not offically that is. VIN numbers were sort of whatever the maker wanted them to be up to that time and as the market for cars went more and more global VIN numbers were driven by US laws. If you wanted to sell here you had to play by our rules which ment following our VIN regulations, putting the VIN where it could be seen through the windshield, etc. Because this car falls right at the changeover time it could start either way. I like the 'new' system, which is now 29 years old, as it allows me to know much more about the car without having to dig through the interior looking for the build sheet. If the VIN has been torn off the car look on the cowl in the engine compartment. I think you will find it stamped into the firewall. It is possible someone just did an engine swap on you somewhere years ago. |

I'm also curious what the "trunk badge of truth" says, though they can be changed or omitted.

Is there some information in the numbers stamped on the frame by the radiator? I never figured out what everything was. Is there anything engine related in those?

Confused? 79 240D or 300D--Mystery solved
Thanks for the help!! Yep it's a 79 240D. At some point in it's life it had the original 4cyl swapped for the 5cyl. VIN is 123123.... the kicker was someone changed the trunk badge to "300D".
Thanks Again!! James |
