Did the 1974 240D come with factory A/C. I am looking to buy one and the owner said that the compressor has been removed but all the other components for the A/c system are present. Fastlane doesn't carry a compressor for it does carry other parts.

Am I walking into a money pit with regard to the A/C or is it something that can be easily fixed at a reasonable cost.

I can't answer if the car had AC from the factory, but if you are willing and able to do the work yourself it isn't too expensive.

A new Seltec or Sanden rotary compressor can be had for $50-$200 dollars. New condensers are less than $100. I usually spend less than $100 on new hoses and fittings. Expansion valves, receiver/driers, and pressure switches are less than $25 each. The evaporator/air distribution might be the big part (assuming it is not already there) but I bet you could find one on eBay for cheap.

Even in Chicago the investment is worth it. I would think in Texas AC would be a necessity.

A good way to find out is to have a pre-inspection done on the car. Mercedes of that era came with A/C from the factory or the dealer and if only the compressor is missing it is easy to tell.

One quick and easy and, most importantly, cheap, way to find out is to take it to an A/C repair place and show them what you have. Tell them you are planning on buying the car and ask them what it is going to take to get the A/C going on it. I am sure they are going to say you need a whole lot of this and an whole lot of that, and of course all of this is going to have to come out and be replaced with new and improved stuff because of course they can tell that a person of your background would only want the best and blah, blah, blah....

Anyway, if you can get them to slow down a bit and give you a rock bottom price you will have a much better notion of what you are really dealing with.

Yes that car came with AC from factory.

All you need is another york AC compressor which is available just about anywhere you go, very easy to get one.

like 79mercy says should not be a problem. Provided they left the the AC mount. You can get a compressor from ebay or junkyard buy new drier bottle and expansion valve and o rings those items are cheap two cans of HC-12. You could do a decent job meaing it wont be legal but it be cold and it should not cost more than $100 total.

If the car has AC it should have a knob above the stereo to turns it on. Try turning on the fan blower then turning on the AC knob, you should here the heater fan shut off and the AC fan turn on.
