engine swap into a 180 sedan (ponton)

I'd like to put a later model MB engine in my '55 180. Currently has the 4 cylinder side valve engine. Has anyone done this? Any ideas?

BTW, this is a serious question, so as much fun as you think a 4.5 would be in this little car, that is NOT the idea I am looking for. Some type of 4 cylinder, gas or diesel, is what I need information on.

Since OM 621 engines were used in these cars in the 180Dc version (I still have the 180Dc that was used in the documentary made by PBS on Sam Cooke ), a 190D swap is very appropriate. Plus you will have more power.

You'll just need new mounts for the OM 621. And possibly a new radiator, altho the 621 does run cool for a diesel. Just like the OM 616.

I don't know how it is in OK but around here the wrecking yards are loaded with post '73 diesel MB's. It might be easy to find a donar car and just swap out the engine & trans.

My brother in law has what began life as a 1953 gasoline 180. It was converted by a PO to a 180D by installing an engine that came from a Thermo King refrigeration unit. According to my limited research, Thermo King used 180D engines in their reefer units. I've known 180 owners who said they bought engine parts from Thermo King, as they were much cheaper there that at the MB dealer. I believe the swap was very easy. I do remember that the car has a common Delco alternator in place of a generator.

It's been 15 years since I worked on a Thermo King unit but I believe that the MB engine used was an OM636 and was later replaced with an Isuzu C201. As I remember the OM636 was about 2.0L and about 40hp. Abuse & neglect couldn't kill those engines. Since TK stopped using the MB engine in the late '70's or early '80's, there should be billions of those in wrecking yards. The TK engine might be worth considering if there is a way to confirm that it can be adapted to the current trans. Another issue is, as I remember, the TK engine had a huge oil pan.

Found this about the OM636 engine.

The tranny was a bolt up on my brother in laws - no adapter needed. And, if I remember correctly, there was no need for new engine mounts. It's been a good number of years since I looked at it, though. I don't know what was done about the pan - there was nothing unusual enough for me to look closely at it. Maybe the PO used the pan from the original gas engine.

I used to dream about stuffing a 190SL engine into my '61 Ponton 180b.
One issue with fitting a much-newer MB motor is the Ponton motor mounts being at the front of the block, while Fintail and later MB fours moved them to mid-block. Some of those later OHC fours did retain the threaded holes for the Ponton mount-brackets, So if that's the case, you may be able to fit a '70s 220, 230 or 240D engine in there.

Happy Motoring, Mark
