Learn Something New Everyday

I had to go out of town on a business trip this week so I thought that I would use the opportunity to find some parts for the barn find. My list consisted of trim parts, LF window regulator, & 2 more Bundt wheels.

Out of 6 bone yards only one had a couple of 108's. Those were really picked over. Unfortunately the LF window regulators were both ruined. On a hunch I pulled a LR regulator, Voilą!, it looked exactly the same except for the location of a stop. So I'll swap the stops and a terminal block and I believe it'll work. The only trim piece that I could score was a chrome shifter gate. That'll look better than my crappy plastic gate.

Though all but 1 bone yard had Bundt wheels most were unusable. Thanks to this forum I was armed with some information on what to look for. I found several wheels that looked great but had no steel inerts for the wheel bolts. The bolt holes on ALL of those wheels were trashed mostly from using ball faced bolts instead of using tapered seat bolts. All of the wheels that had the offset stamped into the wheels were ET30. What was disappointing is that all of the 6 1/2 wide wheels were cosmetically banged up with fins missing and bent beads. However, the biggest disappointment was a car that looked like it had been in saltwater. It had 15" polished Bundts that were so corroded that they were barely recognizable. What a shame. I was also amazed at how many cars had short steel wheel lug bolts holding on aluminum wheels.

Out of all that I was able to score 3 6jx14 wheels in nice shape and all have steel inserts for the lug bolts.

Another difference that I forgot to mention about the window regulator. The assist spring is wound in the opposite direction. That can be resolved by turning the spring over or moving the spring from the damaged regulator.

If you mean that the spring is wound like a right hand thread vice a left hand thread, simply turning it over isn't going to reverse the direction any more than turning a screw upside down would change it from a right hand thread to a left hand thread.
