'61 190SL Roadster?

http://freerevs.com/car/20349406

Is that about the normal going rate for one of these in this condition?

It's odd how I'm attracted to the base-model concept, similar to the '67 Porsche 912.

less power, all the class..for a fraction of the cost.

If this car were in 95 point condition, ready for Pebble Beach, yes. But look at it.

I'll give them 5500, given the obvious defects and the unknowns

Wow, that car is pretty rough for that kind of money. It would be a challenge.

It may be worth that much or close to it.

its hard to evaluate the body condition from the pictures but based on the inside of the trunk I suspect it might be fairly solid. Rust is the bugaboo on those.

They aren't making any more of those, you know!

They did not get much respect when new

When I started selling Chevrolets in 62 we were taking them in on trade for next to nothing and we would run them to the Chicago Auto Auction and hope to get $500.00 for them. We also hoped that they would make the 85 mile run from Milwaukee to Chicago non-stop, usually they didn't. I remember driving two of them to Chicago in one month. They rusted badly from the first day they were on the street.

Scarce does not mean rare, and scarce does not mean valuable.

Plus value is in the eye of the beholder.

Rare does not mean valuable either.

Might want to revisit the 190SL market....

I sold a complete 55 190SL that was a somewhat rusty basket case for $5k 7 years ago. I didn't even advertise it, the buyer approached me when he heard I had one.

I also know of a 59 in similar condition, former CA car, minimal rust, and running, driving, go for $25K this year. Belonged to a local MBCA member, who discovered it in a garage where it had been parked since the early seventies, and fettled the car's mechanics, getting it into running condition.

With 300SL prices hitting the stratosphere, 190SL are are rising, with extremely nice examples trading for surprising (at least to me) amounts. rising tides float all boats....

While this example's condition is unknown without a close inspection, the price is not all that far off if it is indeed a running car and it's CA provenence proves out to be true. Glancing at the pictures implies to me that the car may have been Italian issue at some point, and the blue plates, while early blue, should be black plates to be an original CA car.

As an owner of a 1956 190SL, I would say that this price is pretty much on the mark for a car in this state. If you want to get more insight into these cars, check out the International 190SL web site: http://www.190slgroup.com/. There are many owners out there that can assist with placing a fair value on a car. Many in the CAL area.

I think nthat California and New York are unique markets because of those states' place in the economy of the country. I don't believe that they represent the status quo.

I think the market for such cars is world wide not just regional. Heck nothing is worth much in Michigan at present....unfortunately.

Thankfully if you have a car for sale the world is at your computer if it is something with a wide appeal and short supply.
