Sometimes, something in the instrument panel makes this lovely noise. I'm guessing it has something to do with the trip odometer? The odometer, speedometer, and trip odometer still work despite the racket. The car in question is of course Wilma, 1970 250CE (originally sold in Italy, imported to Saudi Arabia, then Germany, and finally the States.)

Man, what racket. I had a rabbit speedo cable get dry enough to sound like that once.

I agree...cable lube. The rubber jacket on the cable is probably failed too. Lubing the cable will be a short term fix, a new cable is probably in order if you can get one.

My 68 280SE made that exact sound. It turned out to be the speedometer itself. I sent the speedometer out to palo alto speedometer to have them repair, clean, and calibrate it, and that solved the problem.

Thanks John, thats what I was thinking. I'm sure the cable could probably use lubrication, but when I disconnect the speedometer cable and drive, the sound is gone. Thank god for the quick access port (aka center dash speaker hole.)

My 450SEL makes a racket and it's also the speedometer. I've opened it up and lubed it which fixed it for a winter but now that it's getting cold again, it's back.

My GTO did that when it was cold, then one day it just stopped. So did the speedometer.

Is your odometer working properly? If not (check if it is slow), then it's probably the zinc gear drive wheel that is slipping on the shaft in your speedo. Common ailment. I had it in my 250C and also in my current coupe. Screeches like crazy, especially in cold weather. There are postings on how to take your speedo apart and rought up the shaft and/or glue it.
