Mercedes 280e

Hello,
I have the opportunity to buy a 77 Mercedes 280e. the body and interior are rally nice, the #2 rod failed and has lodged against the side of the block. couple of questions,
1) was the rods a weak point? or did most likely somthing else happen to fail the rod?
2) Was hoping I could save the engine, are parts fairly easy to come by?
3) or should I just scrap the engine and find a realtively good donor engine?
Any thoughts or advice would be greatly appreciated
thanks
dan

Are you sure it has a bad rod?

1- No not at all. Was it run low on oil?
2- parts are very easy to get.
3- Since the interior and body are so nice i would repair the original motor.

You can save this car.

Hi
thanks for the reply. Don't know exactly what is up with the engine. A "mechanic" told the owner the #2 rod is broken and wedged against the block at the engine mount. Won't know for sure till I take the plunge. sounds like it was run low on oil to me.

So the rod blew out the side of the block?

M110's are not known for throwing rods.

they claim it did not crack the block. just wedged. Story is they were decelerating while exiting the highway and it died and would not restart

a little more than that (but not much). one other concern, the car has been in storage for a couple of years. I am concerned about the injection system. is it fairly straight forward to clean up?

you're not going to be fixing that motor. It's a no-win proposition. A rebuild will be thousands.

There are plenty of used motors about. Heck, I have four last time I bothered to check.

I think you are correct. I get the car in my garage on Saturday, so depending on the evaluation I will be looking for a motor.

Can anyone tell me, what is the difference between a (1977) W116 car with a 6 cylinder and a (1977) W123 with a 6 cylinder?
thanks

Find a euro spec motor, or parts car better yet.

I just pulled a motor from a 1978 Euro 280SLC and scrapped the car yesterday if you need it.

absolutely agree... ignore the "save that motor" speech... the most cost-effective way is simply getting another good M110, like Al's

IF car been sitting it's a good idea to remove gas tank and flush it out. Check and see it's not all rusted out in the inside my car sat for years I had to replace my tank. Replace strainer and fuel filter. check fuel lines and replace as needed.

I agree replacement engine is way to go. If you can afford it I recommend a euro motor. or M117
